Why does Amtrak seem like the hardest to get an interview with? I have applied many, many times for Assistant Conductor out of NYC and not even an interview. I mean Conrail,NS I have had interviews with at least. I believe i will get one with CSX soon too and another for NS but Amtrak not a sniff. Any ideas or its just the way Amtrak is?

NYC probably had hundreds of more applicants...

True Sean NYC probably had tons . Atwits dont give up you will get on with some persistence . I am a Journey Carman and decided I'd like to move from Frieght to passenger rail . I applied had a great interview passed all the tests and it still took me a couple of tries . It seems at least here in Seattle that rather than experienced Railroaders they'd rather hire some youngster fresh off a submarine with no experience . Not knocking our troops but that's just the way it is here . Keep your head up and keep applying . And by the way I am now an Amtrak Carman !

A couple of questions about Amtrak hiring. I just applied to Amtrak C&S Helper in NY. They are hiring 25, which sounds like a real lot. What are your thoughts on this job? What i really want to ask is, do most railroads including Amtrak not like when people apply to, too many jobs? Meaning if you apply to Conductor all the time and also apply to other positions at the same time. Do they not like that? Does that throw them off from looking at you? Thanks

Okay, so this isn't about getting a job with Amtrak, but curious if anyone knows - if you work for a freight railroad, do you get any kind of discount or free pass to ride Amtrak?

@chad - it use to be like that. I know it says something to that degree in union pacific website but it also says if hire after a certain date that you will not receive that benefit.

Id ask your employer for more info. I know first hand that bnsf doesn't get discounts anymore

Prepare to pay full price! lol
@atwitsend I have no idea on that one to tell you the truth?

Sean I found out why they hiring so many guys. They are hiring 25 C&S helpers and 30 Track workers in the NY area because the NEC got a TON of money that Florida was dumb enough to reject. The DOT took the money or most of it and gave it to the NEC to upgrade tracks and signals to improve speeds. They want to get high speed trains consistently travel at 150-160 MPH. So that is the reason. Florida is beyond STUPID for refusing that money. That is what they get when they elect a nitwit.

When you take that money the Fed owns you so that is why a lot of states reject it. High speed rail is a joke and will never happen in America. Too expensive and way to late to start. The U.S. should have jumped on that bandwagon years ago like Europe did.

All of my friends back home keep telling me about them hiring a bunch of jobs for the High Speed Rail in Michigan and I keep telling them the samething you said Sean. I think it is so funny how people are so blind to the money the government is wasting on High Speed Crap.

I disagree with both of you, but that's ok. We all have opinions.

Highspeed rail is starting to happen now . It may seem like a waste to the train crews running freight but in the passenger world it's not so bad .just ask Joe Biden

I am happy to say that I got a call today asking if I would like to interview for Conductor trainee. Naturally, I said yes. They sent me some forms in email to bring with me to the interview next Wednesday. Crossing my fingers on this one.

I felt like I had a great interview but there was an Amtrak employee coming out before I was called in, and one waiting to go in when I went out. Both wore their Amtrak ID's around their neck as they are required to while on the property. A friend from that crew base said they knew of at least 4 internal candidates and there might have been more vying for the 4 positions. They interviewed for three days and the panel had said all offers would be made on Friday. I wasn't too surprised when I didn't get the call yesterday. Very disappointed. But not surprised.
Down but not out. Thanks to your book I had a beautiful resume and was prepared for the questions. Next time!

Keep plugging away man. It's almost impossible to beat out current employee's for a job.

I just applied to the train attendant/service attendant in miami florida are there any current employees out there that can tell me more about the position other than the summary on the career site?
Posted 8 months ago # -
How difficult is it to get hired on as a train attendant? I have over 8 years customer service and over 4 years in sales and I have an associate degree in marketing management.

It sounds like your back ground is not bad for the job tish so you would probably have
as good a shot as anyone else. You may want to get a copy of the RR jobs guide, downloadable e-book and read all the threads on this forum so you will be prepared if they
email you for an interview. Good luck!Posted 8 months ago # -
Is Amtrak a government job?
Posted 7 months ago # -
@iron horse I don't think it is classified as one, but I could be wrong.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Amtrak is NOT a government job. They are the National Rail Corporation, and are a government entitiy ONLY when they need to suck up more government money! LOL
Actually they are one of those few "government/private entities" that remain from the grand experiment in public/private joint ventures. This one just can't seem to support itself, and without them, there would be pretty much no passenger service in the US, so they continue to exist on subsidy and keep on rolling. I would actually like to see them make it on their own, as I really believe if they were forced to run privately, we would see a passenger train service much more like that in Europe!Posted 7 months ago #
