I know I will find out this information Monday when my class starts but I was wondering if the voucher they give you for boots is for certain stores. I've just been trying to look around and get some trying on done so I don't have to spend alot of time on getting a pair (I am very particular on how my shoes fit and yes I have had steel toes before). Plus the traffic around here is a bitch no matter where you are so dont want to have to get in 1 or 2 nights either. FYI I am NOT considering buying before class. Just wanted to clear that up.

I tried getting that information out of Robby when I talked to him, but he just said to wait until Monday and they will give us the voucher and info then. Was trying to pre shop as well.

@redsox. I'm supposed to start in Oklahoma City with a target date originally posted March 26th. I did my strength test Feb 1st and received the email saying i passed medical standards Feb 2nd. I haven't heard anything since. Just waiting on the final offer and hoping the class doesn't get cancelled along with all the others that have

@weezer. Well congrats to you on passing! They told me today that it would be 1 to 3 days before they know about the strength test! Hope I hear from them soon! They said I'll hear from them on the final medical review on or before march 9th. That is if I pass the strength test.

I just got my boots today. I had a choice of 2 stores to get them at. They pay $110 and you pick up the rest through a payroll deduction or two. You can only select from approved BNSF boots, you don't have your choice of the store. I got Timberland's. $132. Pretty nice. Only took me 5 minutes to pick my pair, but I wear a size 14 and didn't have much choice out of what I could pick from. Good Luck and study, don't feel overwhelmed, everyone else does too.

Well, if they haven't rescinded the offer yet, it's still a go. Finals don't usually come until about now, so take a deep breath and hang in there. No news is still good news.

@Wannabe - I am in the conditional offer phase of trying to hire on in Los Angeles. Just finished all medical but waiting for CHS to "clear" me still. Conductor class still scheduled to start 3/26. Where are you at in the process?

I've been marked up in Kansas City for 7 weeks now and haven't worked a single day yet. Actually just started a job at Target yesterday just to help pay the bills. Things are pretty slow right now in Argentine Yard....

Guys, depending on where you are it's a bad time to Mark Up. Hang on in there, it will all turn around by May. This is a reality check, hire on at a Terminal that relies on a seasonal product and this will happen. I am blessed in my ignorance to have hired on in Seattle (Interbay) which services a large Port with a lot of mixed traffic.

Right now is a bit slow, but depending on where you mark up, we are already starting to see an uptick in some areas. This business is cyclical, and you need to expect to spend some time on retention boards, or worse yet, "furloughed" for periods of time, in your first couple of years or so. It just happens, but recovery always comes. Just try to hang in there!

were are some good places to go without the slowdown?

I would imagine any location that doesn't rely on agriculture for its trade. Think mining or port activity. Also, manufacturing probably doesn't slw much as the seasons change. Look at a map of the area around the terminal...is it all farm or grazing land? Do the math from there.

Well I know even the intermobile yards slow down usually come jan, which isnt the case this year, but who is to say it wont happen again next year/

wannabe - You're right but hedge your bets, a lot less chance in Seattle than the Grain or Coal belts. We are moving everything from Coal, Grain, Autos, Rebar, Containers, Korean and Japanese electrical appliances, Chinese cheap crap, Ethanol, Gas, in fact you name it we're moving it.

New to the railroad hiring proess so I'm going to ask a few questions. I've applied for the railcar repair position and have been sent a email requesting me to take the online test. Which I have done. I have also applied as a Special Agent as I have a law enforcement background and degree in law enforcement. How do I handle this situation if I get a offer on both the jobs, but say the special agent position comes late? Any clue on the hiring process for a special agent position with BNSF? Would I even have a chance at it with 6 years experience, college degree, and explosives training? Can I transfer from one position to another right away?

@Jaso310: Since you've been selected to take the railcar repair online test, you are going to recieve a Hiring Session invite in a few weeks pending you passed the online assestment test. If you get hired for that position you will not be able to attempt to transfer to another craft such as a special agent until you've held the railcar repair job for a year.
