From what I heard there are guys laid off in Sarnia. I hear they plan on calling us back in March. Im laid off out right now but transferring over to a car mechanic apprentice pending I do well on the mechanical aptitude test. Anyone know where I can practice some?

I dont know about CN, but every one I have ever done is a gear or pulley test. Its basically disassembling a simple machine and putting it back together. Google them, if you passed the switch test it should be cake.

Yah I passed the switch test. I'm already a conductor.
Thanks

I think is one of those if the gear spins this way then which way will the 10th gear spin, only my guess,I think fiin is right, google it, and maybe check spatial testing with shapes and angles....good luck careerman

I doubt it will be that hard.

Careerman, the mechanical aptitude test for Car Mechanic in B.C. was very easy; questions showing an exploded part, with sides labled "A, B, C, etc". You are presented with four options of the assembled piece, and you have to choose the correct one by matching the A's to the A's, B's to the B's, etc. I suspect that it is probably pretty much standardized across the country, although I could be wrong there.
They noted that most people don't complete all the questions in the allotted time (we were given 30 seconds per question), but I found it was no problem (I should note that I hold a ticket as a pipe-fitter already, however, and this was 1st year exam stuff). The most complex assembled pieces contained six parts, however most were only made up of three or four. I wouldn't sweat it, if you can assemble a model kit, you're well prepared to pass.Posted 3 months ago # -
Sorry to hear that Careerman.
How far along was your training? I take it they give you another job? How exactly does that work?
I guess they arent posting conductor positions for awhile then. More time at BIT for me lol.

Good luck!

Schmitz Bitz you were exactly right about the test. It was the same thing you described. 20 questions with 10 mins to complete. She says to me that I passed and then she says actually you done verrrrry well. So I either got perfect or maybe like one wrong or something like that.
Thanks again guys!!!!

hey folks! new here, I recently applied for carman mechanic apprentice in jan, attended the job seminar, passed the apptitude test, and did the physical exam.
On the CN website it just updated last week "Candidate Pool". its been almost 2 weeks and I still haven't heard anything? Should I email or call them or just wait it out?
any advice would be greatfull :)Posted 3 months ago # -
From what I was told, they build up the candidate pool and then the head bosses look through and decide who they want to work for the company based on test scores, interview scores ect... I think I waited about 3 weeks before I got the phone call for my conductor position after it went to candidate pool. Some say its good to call others say its bad to bug!!!! Your call...

The information careerman provides corrolates with what I was told during my interview. The HR rep stated that you would be given scores based on your interview, testing, medical, and prior experience when you go into the candidate pool. As positions become available, the people with the highest cumulative score will be selected and contacted.
What doesn't make sense is if your seniority is based on the date of application, but you sit in the candidate pool for six months, does that mean you actually have six-months seniority over the guy next to you, who started last week and applied the week before (speaking in regards to new hires only, of course).

How it worked in Toronto for the conductor positions was at the end of the in-class training you drew a number and then you drew from another hat to determine your seniority
Posted 3 months ago # -
I find it strange that you guys are layed off out east and yet we have massive openings out west for conductors.... but then I guess not many want to transfer and loose thier seniority (not to mention the whole move thing) Right now in Edmonton, there are 3 goups of about 20 each (give or take a few) training, and they are already planning the next conductor class will start around April. (3rd party rhumer, don't bank on this!)

All Toronto guys are now recalled back to work for conductors.

Posted 2 months ago # -

Posted 2 months ago # -
@joker_card - be patient! They dont send you for a physical/drug test for no reason.
@careerman PM'ed you
Posted 2 months ago # -
Agreed with canuckmatt! There is quite a $ value to getting an applicant through the background check, interview process and physical. If you made it that far they are interested!
Posted 2 months ago # -
well ya you r pretty much hired thats what a contingent offer means as long as you pass everything you r hired guaranteed CN just moves slow as shit i was released to start within 2 in a half weeks after my interview with UP. CN same time frame and still waiting to schedule my physical ability test but joker_card message me your number since it looks like we will b working with each other and ill let u know every thing i have been told so far
Posted 2 months ago # -
Online says contingent offer extended but I was told the training was suppose to start on the 23rd
Posted 2 months ago # -
It varies. The interview, medical, backround check and getting hired all took place within a week.

They move dates all the time to suit their scheduling..

Hello everyone this is my first post on here.
I recently just got out of the U.S. Army after 4 years and have applied at CN in Markham Illinois. Just south of chicago. I applied for two openings. Signal apprentice and Car mechanic apprentice. I don't know what to expect. I just applied yesterday February 20, 2012 but was wondering what to expect. From the looks of it on their website they really like to hire good military background people but I wasn't sure if they just say that or what? Can anyone give me some ideas to help get selected or any thing about how long maybe it will be to hear back? Thanks alotSAPPERS LEAD THE WAY!
