I have an interview with CN railroad this coming thursday 3-8-12! i am very nervous because i do not do well in interviews. my father has worked for cn for almost 20 years. i just wanted to know some of the interview question asked, how long the interview might be and any other tips to help me get this job!! thanks..
@christanberry
where are you interviewing for?
its track maintainer position, my interview is in plover wi!
every answer is safety, if she asks you what coulour the sky is you should safety, you will do fine.....
haha, okay man..ill remember that..thanks..
Hey Guys, I'm new here. I have an interview in Duluth, March 4th for a Track Maintainer position and I was wondering if it's better to dress up (Dockers/Tie) or look the part, Work boots, jeans, and a button up shirt. I Would think it's better to dress up but my buddy's dad who's been working for CN for 30 years says's to look the part? Is he right?
He is absolutely wrong !!!!!!!!!!!! No need for the tie but Dockers, Dress shirt and shoes not sneekers. Oh and make safety your #1 topic of conversation at interview
Proper dress shows proper respect towards the interviewer, who ultimately makes the initial decision to move you forward to hiring process.
so what im getting, is most of it is all about safety for track maintainer?? is there any other questions any of you guys can remeber that would maybe freeze me and catch me by suprise..Im so paranoid about this interview, i would like as many tips as possible..
hello! does anyone know what exactly it means to be in the CN candidate pool? ive tried searching for it but i cant really seem to find a definitive answer. some say it means your hired and are waiting for training date. others say it means your just an option that hr has to choose from at a later date. any help would be greatly appreciated!
(New Guy) Just wondering if anyone had info on next brakeman position in Memphis, TN. Should it matter that i don't have any experience working for a railroad? I have experience working shift work and working outdoors but never with a RR. I have also purchased the ebook and read it over and over but any insight would be much appreciated.
Just got my call. March 26., Conductor Toronto yard.
congrats finn! so how long were you in the candidate pool for? almost 4 months if im reading the posts correctly???
Got my call also for conductor training march26 for Sarnia,ontario.......yee ha
Congrat's guys!
Thanks guys!
Yup, was in the pool around 4 months. Did my medical in early November.
Congrats to those of you who have gotten your calls. (more seniority for me ;) ) Anyways Just finished 1st week of boot camp so 4 weeks in and thought I would pass on a couple of things I heard / have seen / answer one or two questions above.
1st. Candidate pool with CN means you are in, just waiting a slot in a training course. The way this is picked is with the following formula: your score on interview & test plus a factor for the home terminal they have assigned you to... (this may not always be your first pick!) when they have enough to schedule a new class, then they wait until just before that class is about to begin (ok I am editorializing a little bit) then call you and give you your start date.
I have no knowledge of the East or South, but in Western Canada, they are talking about running courses for about the next 6 months.. figure on 20-40 people starting every 2 - 3 weeks. The figure I heard is 800 new employees (all different trades!) this year for the west alone. (Company wide, a number I heard, but don't quote me on it, is 2000 per year company wide for the next 5 years.
As for interview questions... Here is a little tongue in cheek sample but I think you will get the idea!
Q1: What colour are your work boots?
a1: The safest possible colour of Safety boots that I can safely purchase.
Q2: If you are told to Take track 3, kick the last 5 cars to tk 7, then double the remainder to tk 9 and pick up the 5 you dropped in tk 7... What do you do?
A2: Since I did not understand the question (you not being trained yet!!!) I would take the safest course of action, I would do nothing and ask my supervisor for clarification on how to safely do that.
Q3: What is the name of your first child?
A3: While her birth certificate says her name is Christine, we call her my her nickname, SAFTEY.
So you see, no matter what they ask you, it is about safety!
Cheers
Hey new to the forum, I had my interview back in December for the Sarnia conductor position, passed all the tests and was under candidate pool since January, however now it's saying that im not selected. I emailed the lady and she said that there was a fierce competition and that I am still in the pool for the next class in the fall. Does this happen often? Or does that mean that I'm out? I am just wondering if this happens frequently or I did something wrong..I do know a couple people in the field and thought that would help me...but I guess not enough..any thoughts on my chances still?
@2ndmerlin thanks very much for the insight! its only been a week since my status changed to "candidate pool" but not knowing exactly what i was waiting for was causing quite a bit of stress...
smith131 It may be that your still in the pool but who can tell if they decide to start from scratch again when hiring starts??? If slots open up then keep applying..
@smith131, since you are in candidate pool, you do not need to start over! with CN this means you are in. (I have someone in my class who had to wait 18 months for a slot in a class!) I do however recommend you stay in touch with your HR rep so they know you are still interested. In addition, at this point they will actually talk with you, and will discuss other options if you bring it up... That is what happened with the guy I know, he was in pool for a long time, talked with HR and they found something in another area for him.. then he was in a class within a few weeks.
Sorry Sean but this IS how CN works. I know other RR are different. (I have had lots of conversations with the HR people over the last couple of weeks)
@Fiin,
Congrats man!!! Long wait but you made it!
@smith131,
Until you get the call to start, there is no harm in applying for other positions. This helps keep your head in the game and shows your interest. Hang in there!!!
Thanks for the feedback!! Glad to hear that I still have a chance...I did speak to hr and she told me to try applying in other areas and that I will be considered in the next class, anyone know when the next class is going to start in t.o.? Or is the next one in the fall?
If I hear anything in this class Ill let ya know forsure.
