Postings for CT in St.Paul run often, it is highly competetive as thousands apply for so few positins. All I can say is keep triing sooner or later your # will pop! As for any other places, everytime they become available, apply, even if you've received the "no longer under consideration" for a previous application. Check the req.# they are different everytime they put a new posting for whatever area you are interested in, at least that's what I go by. You can apply as many times for the same area, however once you get that interview you are locked out of that area for at least 6 mos. CP uses behavioral questions at their interviews. Look these up on the internet to get an idea of the type of questions they may ask. If you've never had an interview like that, it will take you by surprise.

Posted 3 months ago # -
Congratulations but sounds like you have a conditional offer if you still have to do a physical...
Posted 3 months ago # -
would their physical be compared to a dot physical? because my previous employers required that i do a dot physical every year for my commercial license?

I got a call today from CPRR. They invited me to come to a hiring event next week in Minot, ND. From what I understand, there is no available housing in ND. I have to drive 14 hours to get there and the cheapest motel is $110 per night. Does anyone know whats going on up there?
Posted 3 months ago # -
Bunk930, it sounds like a preview interview. I would go online {randmcnally maps) to find exact location, also online travel discount sites (priceline.com etc) to check out all possible motel availabilities. $110 per nite sounds steep for cheap. Good luck

There's a massive oil boom going on in the Minot area, and a flood destroyed a couple hundred homes last summer. That's why.

Yeah no doubt! Sounds like ND is the new Texas of the 70's.

They will smell your nervousness in an interview, Show confidence, rehearse your answers, study behavioral interview questions, Don't break your bearing, Go in with an answer to every curve-ball question you can think of.... if you go in half assed they will know. And in the end they will hire a employee that is NOT half assed. Hope to work with you soon!

thanks harly!

Good to know, harly. I will definitly keep that in mind, but you are right my biggest problem is I overcram, I go over every possible scenario, And feel pretty confident until I sit down in front of them and I go nearly blank. I hate interviews. I take all the advice given on this forum yet to no avail I get a mental block. I know it's something i need to work thru, & with each passing interview I get better & feel more secure about it. Do not misunderstand, I know I'm capable of doing whatever job I apply for or else I wouldn't apply. Again, thanx for the insight!

@BTiller: Thought you might like to know that my status changed this morning from pre- qualified to "We'd like to invite you to training". Was a bit of a shock to say the least. I'd kinda gotten used to the not hearing anything. I guess it means bad news for someone else though as they've more than likely failed a background, reference or medical. I start March 12th. Guess I should post this in the just got hired thread as well :-)
@pacgrewes: I hate interviews as well :-) My CP interview was my first behavioral interview ever and my first interview in probably 10 yrs. I've kinda just walked into jobs in the past. Behavioral interviews are kinda hard to prep for when you dont know what they're going to ask. They're looking for past experiences and how you handle situations not hypotheticals....but I'm sure you know all that already :-) I found repeating a question out loud was a good way to stall for a bit in order to gather my thoughts and come up with an answer.Posted 2 months ago # -
@hrly: I merely mentioned ct as a short version for conductor trainee. Sorry for the confusion. @chaingaing: I hear you buddy, It's been nearly 12 yrs since I had an interview, like you I normally walked into jobs. As an interstate trucker most of my adult life most companies just look at your safety record & yrs of experience. A few of those behavioral questions seem alien to me as alot of times I cannot think of a single experience that fits... so I punt, and maybe come of as looking"half-assed.

Hello, I applied for a job at Canadian Pacific and was called for a job interview on Monday the 27th. I was sent a login and password for AW Fraser and the login and password were invalid. I have to complete the test by tomorrow at midnight in order to move on with the hiring process. Would I even have a chance going to this interview on Monday or will I not even be considered since I didn't do the test even though they gave me a password that didn't work. Any suggestions on what to do??

blank, if I'm not mistaken there should be a link to e-mail HR if you have any questions. I would shoot them an e-mail letting them you know you are having a problem. I'm presuming you have read all the instructions thereto. I highly doubt you would be accepted to interview without the successful completion of the on-line requests, on time! p.s if there is a phone# to hr I would call as a back up to your e-mail.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but thought I would forward it on... (They are asking us to pass the word on as they need lots.)

@Sean perhaps we should have a sticky forum for Job bulletins from insiders? Just an Idea

Ok thanks guys what's my chances getting in I have a cdl I have worked around constriction equipment and I have run heavy duty wrecker and I have experience working all weather conditions and on call also. I applied for the conductor trainee. Also does cp go by body index bmi ? I'm heavy but I don't look like slob I guess I'm stocky !

Hey "Kid", you described your background and you sound like a great candidate for MOW in engineering services. I applied for their track laborer position back in December and was contacted in Feb. I'm now working for CP. Truck driving, construction, farming, & military are all great assets and most of all a proven SAFETY RECORD will set you apart from the competition. As for BMI, I can't tell you if they test for that, but I can say that in my MOW orientation class of 40 or so, there were plenty of big guys, but none that I would call obese.
If you want conductor, by all means go for it. One thing I have to say to everyone is the importance of being drug-free (I'm talking about the illegal stuff here of course). Talking to some HR folks, that appears to be a HUGE eliminator of otherwise qualified candidates. For those who have not figured it out, decide what's more important to you- your drugs or your dreams!
Posted 2 weeks ago # -
In the past CP has usually been pretty quick to let you know if you are a go or no go. lately I've been waiting nearly a month to hear one way or another about a position I applied for in St.Paul. Kid; you definitly sound like a shoe-in based on your previous experience, & khock is square on about drug use, definite no-no.
