I wouldn't care what railroad class I start at, either if its class I, II, & III as long I get hired.

That is the right attitude!

I figured since I've turned in application to both BNSF and UP, I might as well hit up some of the smaller lines around here (there seems to be a lot of them). I just applied for a conductor position with one of the railroads under the Watco Companies (Class II) banner - we'll see if they will hire on a newbie.

Yes they will. Also they will train you to be an engineer pretty quick!

On a whim, I contacted Watco's HR recruiter this morning and asked what kind of timeline they were looking at to have the conductor position filled. As it turns out, the job was just posted on 12/20 so she said to give it about a month. However, she did say she was going to make a note on my application that I did follow up and was very interested in the position. (Hopefully that is a good thing...)
All in all, everyone I talked to there was extremely friendly and willing to answer my questions. Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to call.

Does anybody on here have any experience (working with, interviews, etc.) with RailAmerica? I haven't been able to find much information regarding their company. They seem like post job openings frequently on their website. Figured I could give them a try.

They sound a lot like Watco Companies: Lots of disconnected shortlines and regionals. I'm sure you could google "working for railamerica" (or something along those lines) and come up with someone who has something to say on the matter.
For myself, I've added Montana Rail Link to the list of Class IIs that I've applied for. I might have to look into RailAmerica and see what they have in my area.

I've tried Google with that exact query and have not gotten any results. RailAmerica has a pretty large network and I am a bit suprised that I can not find many results. The results I have read seem a bit negative, so I figured I would check on here to find some more feedback.

Background check question for a class III
How's it going yall??new to the forum and just had a quick question for yall
Was wondering if PHL or any other Class III hires when I have a misdemeanor conviction?? The conviction was in 2008 and it is an assault with a deadly weapon(misdemeanor). Long story short..was involved in a fight at a bar and threw a bottle and it hit someone..I'm 24 years old and this all happened when I was 20..
Thanx for the help yall, its greatly appreciated

I'm sure that it won't necessarily disqualify you from employment with a RR... We all make mistakes. I would definitely apply and see how far I get, if I were you.
If a class III performs the same background checks as a class I, then they will find it on your record as they look back up to 7 years I think. So definitely don't try to hide it if you ask you for that information.
Best of luck to you!

Just be honest and tell them it was a bar fight and your were acting in self defense!

Most railroads in thier backgrounds check care mostly for DWI type driving offences ... and most of everything else gets excused unless its something SERIOUS where they wont even look at u twice !!!!! Well hope this helped u out !!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted 2 months ago # -
PS when ur in the interview if it doesnt come up DO NOT for the life of u bring it up ... MEANINGGG they MAY have seen it already and excused it from adding it to the interview process !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted 2 months ago # -
yeah don't bring up any infractions unless they specifically ask for them.
Posted 2 months ago # -
ditto: a layer told me along time ago NEVER volunteer ANY info unless specifically asked.

Exactly!

Hey. Not sure if this is the correct place to post but I'll take a shot, hoping that I am posting this up in the right place. Haha... I doubt myself mostly since this is a hiring question about a lower class railroad.
So I've been looking to change career choices from a Electrical Engineer which would land me in front of a computer or a laboratory and have been making a move into the Railroad Industry. I live in the state of New Mexico so somewhere local is better.
I've put positions in for Union Pacific in Oklahoma City, and San Antonio, in addition for BNSF in Mino, and Willmar, as well as CSX in Nashville.
But my main question is that I also put in a position in Alamosa, Colorado for San Luis Rio Grande (SLRG).
https://www.riograndescenicrailroad.com/aboutus/employment/44-train-service-employees.html
I have read the ebook that Sean created (Go get yourself one if you have not yet) and there was one question that I do not remember it answering in particular. As to my knowledge, SLRG is a Class II railroad, and was it right for me to apply for a conductor position, not having any prior work or education in railroad.
And if I do get some kind of interview or something, should I be at all worried about job security on a smaller railroad like this.Any response is appreciated. And I apologize for any poor grammar or if I did not properly describe my situation.

Ah another thing.
I first put my application in at the beginning of March but I have not heard anything back or received any email.
Should I call or ask in some way to find out if they had properly received my application and what my status might be?Posted 1 month ago # -
Jeremy Sur - 19 days since your application is nothing, there are people here who heard nothing for 3 months. Take it easy and keep on applying.
Posted 1 month ago # -
@ALB Though should I at least make sure if they had received my application or not?
Posted 1 month ago # -
Jeremy: usually when you apply on line it acknowleges that the app. has been recieved, usually followed up by an email telling u that they recieved it. As far as job security, nothing is really quaranteed. You need to create your own job security by keeping your nose clean, eyes & ears open, & mouth shut except to ask questions. Class of rr is determined by amount of revenue they pull in annually. First step is to get an interview, show interest in the position you are appliing for. They will see your other qualifications & may ask you about them, that'll open the door for you to tell them where you are looking to go in your career with the rr.

The Texas-New Mexico Railroad called me yesterday and is over nighting me a drug test.. I assume their pretty serious?
Posted 1 month ago # -
Mprather91 - Sounds like it mate.
Posted 1 month ago # -
How would they know it's your sample and not someone else's?
Posted 1 month ago # -
Well, they sent me some papers to go to LabCorp to get the test done. I went today and they send the railroad the results.
Posted 1 month ago # -
Yeah that is what I thought but you made it sound like it was a home drug test! LOL So I thought that was strange. lol
