"Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in the final step of our application process for the Freight Conductor, (033470). We would like to invite you to a hiring session to learn more about our company and participate in a formal interview for the position."
I got this in an email this morning from CSX, I was pretty excited. Is there anything I can do to prepare for this initial interview? Does it help to have longtime employees of CSX as friends? Theyve been suggesting I apply for years. If I can get to step 2, then I intend to buy Seans book. Any advice?
Im Bruce from Nashville, by the way.

@sirtucker - All I can say is darn. I applied for that one as well and since you have already heard about the hiring session. I am going to presume that mine will change to "not selected".
Anyways congratulations on the first step. The best advice I can give you is to study CSX website and try to pull some interesting facts about the company like (Safety records, Finacial records) as well as some things you like about them.
When you are at interview take notes and talk highly of me so I can get job as well. Just kidding on last part. Anyways take notes on hiring session with paper and pencil or pen. The reason I say that is because in my interview with Union Pacific the HR guy ask what did I get out of the session?
Anyways there is a lot to be read on the forum so start reading and if you haven't bought sean book do so. It wil give you a few tips as well.
Good luck and don't forget to talk about me. LOL.

Good going Sirtucker!! Dress well for hiring session as well and Don't forget SAFETY!! Big key!! Like Volusia said, take notes and don't look off in the distance like you are not paying attention... Follow the person who is speaking all the way.. I am now going to my physical/drug screen on Monday and then my strength test on Tuesday. The background check is underway as they called my current job yesterday to verify employment. They are moving fast and thats a good thing!! You should wear a suit by the way. Be early and sign in right when you get there as that should designate when you get your interview. I just went to my hiring session last Thursday and as you noticed I am well into the screening process. Before your session I would make sure you have all documents covered and also check that you have all of your previous employment dates accurate! They check back about 8 years but could go further back. Hey Volusia, you may not get a not-selected. It could be the first wave of candidates that they are inviting. My area is still looking for Freight Conductors even after our hiring session. Good luck to both of you!!

Thank you both for your advice, and congratulations to you, Frank. Volusia, Im sure things will work out, and I will say a prayer for you.
I intend to arrive an hour early, Id like to be first in line. I'll have to do some work on the suit part though, would jeans and a dress shirt and blazer be acceptable? I read somewhere that having a CDL permit or license is helpful, Im waiting to take my roadtest for the Class A now. I dont really know how else I can get ready for this initial interview except to know that I have an excellent safety record and have some experience in the requirements for this job. Although Im not certified, I can weld sufficiently, and Ive been an equipment operator for 20 years. Ive always been able to move heavy things safely in order to repair them, jacking them up and blocking them, chaining heavy loads and the like. I dont drink or do drugs so that has to be a plus. What sort of things should I know about the company? Im unclear on how knowing financial information would make me a more attractive candidate.Posted 1 year ago # -
What does csx color assessment test consist of for an entry level signal workers position
Posted 1 year ago # -
@sirtucker - Well with everything you said it looks like your well on your way to a career on the railroad.
The financial part comes in if they ask "why would you leave a stable company" or something like that. If you listen to some type of pod cast on quartly statements they usually have upper management talking about the company. People like (CEO, V.P. Operation).
If you don't have a suit then at least dress slacks, nice collar shirt and tie. The main rule I always heard was dress for success.
I hope some of this helps. But with everything you are telling me about previous experience it really sounds like it would be hard to pass you up.
Good Luck

Sirtucker, I would get the suit! I did and it looks and shows you really want the job!!!! You want it then you have to look and mean business right?
You don't have to get crazy with knowing everything about the company but just look at the CSX website and learn some of what they are about and how they thrive to become the most safest and progressive RR in the USA. Caring for environment and having community awareness programs and activities also getting the younger generations involved in programs as well. Take a look at the site and you will see. Good luck!Posted 1 year ago # -
Suit it is, then. I did see a hell of a good looking tux at the Salvation Army last week, lime green with a purple cumberbun, if memory serves me right, lol.
I found out CSX offers a wellness program helping employees to improve their health. Thats really something...
"Supported by many contributors, more than 15 tons of toys, food and other gifts are tossed by Santa and friends to generations of followers..." Wow. I had no idea.
Y'all were right, there is alot to find. I look forward to using this information during my interview. Ive never been involved with a company that gives BACK to any community with the involvement of its employees. Would make a man proud to wear the company hat, I think.

I wanted to let you know that Seans book is really good. I bought it about 15 minutes ago...now I understand ALOT more!
Posted 1 year ago # -
With this forum and the e-book it's practically impossible not to get hired unless the person has something very negative in their background or they are a real moron.. I'm sure you will do fine. You were smart enough to invest in the e-book and join the forum so your good to go.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Hey Sirtucker, Glad you got Seans E-book!! Now you know what we mean!! I had applied before I bought the E-book myself back then but thank god CSX let's you go in and update your submission and Resume so I did and it payed off!!! Reading the book and being in this forum helps out sooo much!!! And ditto what Sean just said too. Now go to that hiring session and get the job!! Would like to see you do well.

I think I am screwed because all of my application I have put in are messed up when you go back and look at them. What I mean is certain section of the application has deleted certain info making it look like I never filled out application properly the first time. I called CSX to figure out the problem and they told me to email somebody about problem. I am hoping this gets fixed before they review my application.
Anyways last night I was looking at search engine for CSX and was surprised to see a opening in my area. Now you have to understand where I live not many trains run so I was surprised to see them hiring.

Well I got the " we regret to inform you" email the other day. Thank I'm gonna focus on other things for a minute. I dont have my CDL or welding certificate and I'm thinkin cause one of those two not being on my resume I thank I'm fighting an uphill battle.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Frank, where did you apply? I applied in Chicago. App deadline was April 5th. My status change to Pending Manager Interview on April 14. I'm wondering how long it will take them to contact me to set up an interview. I'm very anxious to move along in the process. And do they always notify by email, or do they call by phone?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Hey Bruce from Nashville, how long was it from "Pending Manager Interview", until you got "Congrats for final step and formal interview"? Did they tell you when you start training class in atlanta if you get hired? Just trying to get a time frame on this process, if I do make it through successfully. And Congrats and good luck to you!
Posted 1 year ago # -
mjenn66, Congrats on the "pending manager interview" you should get an email within a few days of that. You are still in pending manager interview status?? They may be still going through and selecting people for hiring session if you did not get invite email yet. It only took a couple of days for me but don't sweat it!! You are in so just hang in there and you will get the email don't worry. Just start preparing yourself. Make sure the resume is ready and get out that suit and tie and make sure they are ready as well. Now you also have to read the parts in Seans e-book about the interview on what to and what not to say during the interview itself. They will give you one of the assessment tests while you are there too. It is the same one you took online when you applied. Good luck and PREPARE!! BE Early, and Always Push in Your chair!!!

Keldrick 1, What position did you apply for? Go ahead and get your CDL permit anyway it cannot hurt no matter what position and you can get it quick. Make sure you get Airbrake endorsement too. I did it for Freight Conductor even know I did not have to but it still is good to have and puts you further into the heavy equipment category.. The welding certificate is awesome to have but you have to go through training of course and it takes a bit of time. Take the OSHA online safety course too. I took the 10 hour one. It all helps..

Volusia, If your job submission is still open you can go in and edit it and fix the areas you need to. When the opening closes then you cannot edit your submission anymore. What I am really trying to say is if the job posting is still open and people can still apply, then you can edit your submission. If the posting closes, you cannot edit submission anymore. There, I think I got it that time !! LOL!!

By the way, Sean to you and everyone in the forum, Have a Happy Easter!! I will be relaxing at Easter dinner Sunday with family and getting ready for physical and drug screen on Monday morning. Have a good one everyone!
Posted 1 year ago # -
@mjenn: I havent been to the interview yet, and I dont think I'll be going now. I looked into my criminal record and was convicted of Aggravated Assault in 2005. I thought it was older than that, but I was wrong. Dont really know what to do now about the interview, but Im pretty sorry for my past, I can admit that. Best of luck to you all, and Happy Easter.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Hey Sirtucker, I would go anyway! What have ya got to lose now? You never know and it depends on what you got charged with exactly. You can explain the situation at the interview privately with the hiring manager and let them decide if you have a chance. At least you will be at the hiring session and get the experience. Good luck
Posted 1 year ago # -
Yeah I would still go and see what happens. At the very least it's good practice to go thru it all. And ditto what Frank68 said.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Just had physical/drug screen yesterday and got back today from strength test!! Now I sit and hope and wait for the good news phone call with my start date at REDI!!!
