I have a question and I hope you can help me. I want to apply for a position with CSX and I am not sure, if I should attach a cover letter with the online application besides the resume? or should I just upload my resume only?

    Thank you

NC-Bound I would not worry about cover letter unless they specifically ask for one.

Thank you Sean Martin. I have sent both CL & resume and did the assessment test. Job closing is in a few hours. I hope they will consider me. Do they give preference to veterans?

@NC-Bound if you are a veteran and follow the simple interview steps in seans book you will be good, I got hired on no problem and I am just waiting for an official start date. To give an example the VP of ops for CSX is deployed in afghan for army right now.

UH ohhhHHHH DO I SMELL promotion for me becoming a clerk to a conductor ... YEEESSS folks .. ONCE u work in ONE craft meaning in ONE particular type of job within CSX u can basically transfer over to ANOTHER type of job after your first year within the date of hire ... theres some rules and regulations that go into but YES you MAY switch jobs(crafts) if u wish to do so ... and IF they have an opening .... for example ... if u get hired as an Intermodal Service Representative an ISR after a year of your hire date u MAY switch to becoming a freight conductor basically ANYWHERE within the CSX network !!! SO for ALL who may be interested in joining the railroad family including CSX HEY you just never know if the job(career) of your dreams turns out to be just a STEP in the procress of obtaining your one true job(career)!!!!

From your friendly neighborhood railroad brother!!!

In life theres not that many people that put something as AWESOMELY together as seans book there are few people who understand the concept of thinking steps making a plan of attack even how to conquer your fears with the many questions floating as we all have thru going to interviews and such ... BUUUT sean has constructed something so beneficial and demanding even to this day as i was hired at CSX using his amazing tools within his book BUUUTT i was also able to tell my friends on it and they got hired (one as a carman and the other as another ISR what I do basically as a clerk)!!! TRUST me folks if seans secrets from his book helped out even people that didnt know anything about interviews .. whats questions to ask ... even what clothing to wear and how to AS WELL prepare a GOOD outstanding resume ... YOU MAY LOOK NO FURTHER... SEAN gives u the tips and know how on what to look for, what steps to take, even what QUESTIONS you must be thinking and ALL before you even step foot into your interview!! The point of this whole paragraph basically breaks down to this ... when a fire starts you CANT put it out until u consume it completely well folks this fire sean created WILL NOT SMOTHER OUT ANYTIME SOOOOON or BURN itself out ... its here for LIFE ... trust me when i tell you BUY HIS BOOK .. READ ALL OF IT .. FOLLOW the steps and tips and u will FINALLLLLLLYYYY >> GET the >>J-O-B<< you have always been dreaming of within the railroad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got my ready to hire email yesterday from CSX and I'm very excited!!!! I was wondering though about the possibility of postponing my REDI date because my first child is expected to be born in two months. I havent got a date yet but I'm afraid ill be in ATL and I won't be able to leave to see my child be born. Does anyone know if it's possible to postpone it or if I would be able to leave and come back to see my child be born? Thanks.

I went to Indianapolis and took my strength test yesterday. It wasn't too bad but that isokinetic thing about kicked my ass and I am in pretty good shape. I think my backround check went through. I had my physical last week. Hopefully I'll get a final offer.

Where can I get Sean's book? Please post the website.

Applied for carman an recd "awaiting manager interview" reply an would like to read for preparation purposes. Also I have noticed that the resume an information submitted was from a previous job title but the problem is I no longer work at the job in which is on there, how should I address this or explain it in my interview?

I am currently in Virginia welding in a shipyard, so I would have to drive home to ga for the interview process and would also like to know how long does this whole process take?

Once you finish all of your preliminary tests for hire, how long does it take to hear something back and get a date to go to REDI? When is the next class there? I heard it takes anywhere from a week to three weeks to hear something back. Any info would be great.

Im in the conductor training class right now 2nd week! question is whats the difference between working in the yard and not? pay difference ? and hours? and how can you you designate that you want to work in the yard? do they ask you?

Scott why would you ask this question here and not right in your own class? yard pay less money and is more dangerous... You have to mark up for the yard if you can hold a position...

HEY FOLKS! Im new to these posts, but ive been reading alot on this forum and decided its time to talk.

I applied to CSX about a month ago for Frieght conductor and my application is STILL pending review. I read on this forum over and over to just be patient.

Sean, your book is rich with Railroad information!Thank you for providing it.

My question is: In the railroad, If someone were to say they had "pull", would that be to his advantage? or frowned upon?

    DPalmer22:

IMHO you need to be very careful about this. If you have someone on the inside that you think can help you then talk clearly with them so you can understand the relationships they have and what they think they can do. If you are satisfied then they can work whatever angle they may have, or are willing to work for you on their end.

I would avoid having YOU giving anyone any impression on your end that you may know someone with pull. That can and usually does come off as an attempted strong arm tactic and it rarely goes over well.

Another thing to be careful of is the person who is doing your "pulling" from the inside. Make sure that they have enough business saavy that they don't do any damage to your cause.

My opinion has several parts to it but I've been involved in most of the above scenarios on both sides of the interview table and can tell you that interviewers can take exception very easily to someone butting into the selection process.

    Good Lick with this.

@DPalmer22....Blathrop99 said it best. The "pull" word probably worked 20 years ago, but when "worst comes to shove", the employer does not want to be in a situation with the FRA with the question.... "Who hired this guy?". Then the recruiter is at fault. I know this seems very technical, but that is how the railroad is. I would not want to be a recruiter trying to read people for hiring that many people that can screw up so many lives. This career does not only affect you but so many other people that live along the tracks. I don't want to be Debbie Downer but if you feel confident in your abilities, you should get the job and deserve the right to serve any railroad.

IMHO .... I would approach cautiously, and not say anything MYSELF, but a good referral is a good referral, when all is said and done. But that potentially, only gets you to the interview. You still have to sell yourself, and EARN the job yourself.

BN asks you on your application if you have a company reference/referal, if you do give their name but that is as far as it goes. I would never reference this at interview, they already know and will not respond well to you insinuating preferencial treatment based on pull. However I will say that having an internal reference can only contribute to your hireability.

If there are any CSX employees working out of the New Castle yard in PA on here. Where all do the runs go to out of that yard?

Thanks for the advice. it seems logical. Im absolutlety confident that i would be very successful as a conductor. Just need an interview.

    mshaffer3371
Your absolutley right. If i were hiring someone that is handling a million tons of freight train i would want to be pretty secure with who im hiring.

    Great advice guys thanks alot!
