So after going through the forums and re-reading Seans book concerning the interviewing process, I still have a question.
How forthcoming should I be in the Interview process about my exit from the service?
First off, I received an Honorable Discharge. However, the separation code is less than perfect. I was a Sergeant in the Infantry, was selected for (Officer Candidate School) OCS, graduated OCS, but failed a gunnery exam while in Field Artillery School. Since the military is cutting Soldiers, I found myself without a job.
I have never been in trouble and have always given the Military 110%. Unfortunately, the Mathematics in gunnery was beyond my grasp. I was not terminated from my job, but rather I was eliminated from a School, which make me ineligible for further service. So technically I was not fired, just simply not allowed to re-up. I completed my three year contract.
My fear is twofold: If I walk into the interview and open this can of worms (Hey guys, I failed gunnery and was eleminated): I fear that I will not be considered. I know that honesty is the right answer and I have every intention of being honest: However, I don't want to open a can of worms that might hurt my chances here...if I don't have to. Perhaps, I'm just over thinking this thing and they don't really want to know...
I presume that they will contact the Company Commander and my other first line supervisors anyway. Do you think I should go ahead and say that I was terminated and explain the circumstances? The alternative is to say that I was not terminated, I have an honorable discharge and leave it at that.
You know what really grinds my gears? After being Airborne Infantry in Combat as a Team Leader... I hate that I feel any regret or shame. Im proud of what WE accomplished and I think its terrible that I should now face an employer with a designator code that's less than perfect....because I reached higher....maybe too high.
I just want to make the move here. If your not prior service please don't reply.
