So, i got the interview yay!! But wait I'm am still on these dang orders. I talked to my supervisor and he said he would let me go to the interview so I can fly down but then I will have to be back bright and early the next day for class. Well that's all fine and dandy but if i get the job What about the physical, strength, and drug test? There isn’t a NS in Arkansas ( was thinking i would just test were the people here test).....and I still won’t be done here until January 18 maybe a little sooner maybe a little later can they just say thanks but no thanks we don’t want to have to wait for you to get off orders or is that illegal

Not sure because technically even if they give me an offer it’s a conditional offer from what i have read. I’m so confused should I just not go?

and If i do go should i just be straight up with them about the situation at the interview? (seems like a good way not to get the job) or wait an see if the extend me an offer?

take a deep breath and relax! I think, at this point in the year, I would go for it, and just be honest with them. In all likelihood, you are going to be fine, and they will either hire or not hire. I would not, however, bring up the legal/illegal thing. I will tell you, from an HR perspective, I can find 10,001 reasons to NOT hire a candidate, and guarantee every single one, will be legal. Not a good road to go up front. One of the big things for railroads is to just be up front. There are many things that can be worked with, as long as it's all on the table, and there are no surprises!

thanks i like to think that i am smarter than to bring up legal issues in the interview LOL. I was merely asking the question if it was legal or not.

Thanks for the good information and i am taking deep breath b/c you are so right i am freaking out. I really want this job. So i am going to try and relax. Heck they may not extended me an offer.

I just dont see the good side in being so up front at first but you are probably right.

Karly--if your in the military they tell you to apply 90 days out from your discharge. For NS, they will make you go down to the terminal where you will be working to get the background check started. NS is the only class 1 that does their background checks "in-house". This means they do not use an outside agency like Verifications Inc. (BNSF) or Axiom Inc. (CSX). You will have to go to the terminal to show them your required ID, sign papers, and answer any questions the NS special agent wants to ask. I really don't believe you'll be able to do this over the phone. As for the physical, NS uses a company called Concentra Medical for their physicals. IF theres a Concentra Medical in your state, you'll be able to take the physical there. NS does not require the IPCS strenght test, so you don't need to worry about that at least. None of the RR's are too "accomodating". Generally speaking if you cannot get their pre-employment requirements completed in the fashion they require and in a specific amount of time, your "conditional offer" will be rescinded. Before you go, contact NS human resources and explain your situation. They may tell you it's best to pass on this offer and apply at a late date, once you've been discharged. What you want to avoid is accepting a conditional offer, and either not completing the pre-employment requirements in time, and or completeing them, and than not being able to make the class and therefore declining the offer. If either of those two things happen, you won't be given a second chance. Once you receive an offer, if you decline it, you have a slim to none chance of them ever giving you another. Good luck !!!

hey thanks for the information there is a Concentra Medical down the street from my base so thanks!!!

Im not active duty anymore. I was. i am in the Reserves an they can call you up for active orders anytime.

"IF" it comes to it i will just fly back for there background check.

As for School dates it could take months from what i hear or it could be really soon just depends. I thought it would be a while with my application but i put it in on Sat they said give us 2-6 weeks an they called Monday! I talked To legal today an they answered a lot of my questions about offers an such...

I'm going to go to the interview an see what happens. Like i said it may not even be a problem. Heck i might not even get an interview!

If you go in honest up front, there are no surprises to trip you up later! As for not being up front with the railroads, trust me, they will know before you choose to tell! Just seems to work that way! Big brother is always over your shoulder. Sounds though, like you have a good solid plan, and given where we are in the year, I would expect that the entire process may slow a bit, until after the end of the year. Like you said, just hope for the best. Good luck!

Karly--if your in the reserves, you have nothing to lose. You will be just fine, regardless of whether your called up or not. The RR's LOVE military application's. If everything in your past is fine, and I assume it is, you'll probably get the offer and job. Your thinking too much into it. Concentra Medical is who handles NS's medical, so your covered. You'll most likley going to have to fly in for the background check BS, but you can arrange a convenient time within a week or two. The time you'll be there will probably be less than 15 minutes, but they need you to come in. Relax, apply, and things will work out fine. I thought you were active duty. If that was the case, you would have a few things more to consider in terms of when to apply. Good luck !!!

Good Job Karly, hopefully NS takes care of its AGR, NG and Reserve military personal as awesomely as BNSF does. I'm prior service and yes, RRs love military.

If you would, chime in later with how they do work with military members who say get called for deployment or weekend duty.

Freewood well you asked if i would chime in later since i got the job the railroad has waited over 3 months for me to get done with training. I just got my pass on background and physical and have a training date of 27 FEB. So far so good but i will keep you posted I still have 60 days of active duty work that i have to do this year i will tell you how that goes. Wish me luck at school. Its almost like it never ends LOL one school after another. In all seriousness my house was hit my a tornado on JAN 23 and we lost everything we own and barley made it out with our lives i am so lucky that i had already gotten this job and that the railroad waited if i had not gone to that interview with the encouragement of you guys i would be even more hard up than i am now. So thanks again.
