I start Train Crew training in KS on Feb 6th. My new career will be close to home and I could not be happier. I would like to thank everyone on this forum, it's extremly helpful to read especially when you have a sudden thought or wonder what to expect. The book is a wonderful investment, I thank Sean for making it and I'm glad to see someone like you (sean) doing well and helping us also.
Best of luck to those going thru the process and I look forward to my new career...and Seniority!!Posted 4 weeks ago # -
Congrats to you both, welcome to the great unwashed ranks of "Pin Lifters"

I got my "ready to hire" notice today from CSX for a freight conductor position in Charleston, SC and am now just waiting for my start date at REDI. Thanks to Sean for a wonderful resource and to the forum community as a whole. This place and the e-book have both been invaluable assets.
I applied for close to 2 years after being discharged from the Marines for positions all over the Eastern United States without receiving so much as an invitation to an interview session. I joined the forum and read the book in (I think) October of 2011, and by January 2012 was in a position to have to CHOOSE between conditional job offers from two class 1 railroads.
I always felt that if I could make it in front of a hiring manager for an interview I had a great shot, but time after time I was denied that opportunity. As you well know, it's an extraordinarily competitive process and you need to arm yourself with every single bit of knowledge you can gain access to give yourself even the slightest competitive edge over the next candidate. Huge thanks again to Sean and everyone here for the help, knowledge, and support!

Well it has been a whirlwind day...
4pm, got a call from CN HR. First she asked if I was still interested, I of course said YES. She then said I have a position in Humboldt (Not one I origionally applied for, but at the interview I had said that it was one I was fine with.) Of course I said that was fine with me. (actually for several reasons, even better location than I had applied for, since it is in easy driving distance, so no need to make accomodation arrangements)
Then came the Bombshell... We need you in Edmonton on Monday, January 30th for training. (I had requested a minimum 2 weeks notice for my current employer.) Being Gobstruck at the short notice, I asked if I could get back to her first thing in the morning.Well after some sole searching, speaking with some good friends (one of which happens to be a minister) my wife and kids, I come to the conclusion that they would not want to be teat that way, and would hopefully respect my not wanting to treat my current employer that way (10 years) so I called the HR girl back and explained my delema.
I put it on the line, I asked, if I say no right now, specifically for this reason, will that blow my application? Her answer was immediate, no, they respect the reasoning, and that I will remain in the Candidate pool for next time. I may have over stepped what she actually meant with my next question, but I asked anyways, "so you are telling me that I do have the job for sure, and I will be called with sufficient notice before the next course?" This was obviously more than she meant to say or was authorized to... as I heard her hesitate, then she said, can you hold for a minute... (she did not put the phone on hold, but rather must have improperly covered the mouthpiece, as I could hear her talking to what sounded like a superviser in the background. Long story short, she came back and said, yes, you have the job and we will get you in the next training available.
Walking on cloud 9 right now!

Just received my Final offer from BNSF to start Conductor training on Feb. 6th in Alliance NE. Couldn't be happier!

Congrats to all the new hires!!
@2ndmerlin,
I had the same sort of dilemma when I started with CN. It was a tough situation to be in but I went ahead and did it. As it turned out, the old employer was okay with the shorter notice and I was just that much further ahead in seniority! Good luck...

2ndmerlin - I too follow the path of the Carpenter (imperfectly), I would have talked to my current employer and explained the situation, they would probably of understood

Congrats guys! Way to go! It's always great to see all these posts, and see all the hard work coming to fruition! Best of luck to you all!
@2ndmerlin - I completely understand your position, but I really do hope you have not shot yourself in the foot! Best of luck to you as you move forward!

Interviewed November, medical/background in December, school start date 30 Jan.
My application was in to CSX and NS for nearly a year. When I changed one line from "20 years military experience" to "more than six years military experience" it took only three weeks to get the interview call. Both lines are true, but the first one showed my age I imagine. Either way, GA bound tomorrow!

hwm - Possible but I don't think that's it. I hired on with BNSF at 57 and there are 4 or 5 guys in my class in their mid fouties. I think it is just coincidence

I do. My experience with being an older woman working for the railroad is different than ALB's. (Although not quite as old...lol) I've experienced first hand discrimination & seen & heard what has been said to the oldest in my class.
Good job changing your application and good luck! If hired, get job insurance!

I agree with rail to a point. When I went to my interview, I had colored my hair... (What was left) just to eliminate any possibly of the "oh, the old guy is applying syndrome". I was good up until the point when the recruiter asked for my ID. She looked at it then back at me, she then said " Wow, you colored your hair" I said "yes (with a smirk on my face) it is a very special event!" I am turning 40 this year and I am sure if I would not have done that, I would not had the job. I could be wrong, but that is what my gut tells me.
Now on the rail, that is a different story, I am getting respect, the younger generation are respecting me for my experience in life. Sad to say, I feel like an old varnished penny, even though I really don't feel that old... That said, realized this is the wrong sticky to post in... Sorry guys and gals.Posted 3 weeks ago # -
LMAO!!!
But see you're a man, so again your experience is different than mine. I have 2 strikes against me, and unfortunately no one cares for my experience in life. Although I did give one guy advice on his child support case as I was a child support officer for a year. lol

Duhhh... after waiting for what was seemingly forever to post in this thread appropriately, I wen't and forgot! LOL
I'm copy/pasting my message from the BNSF thread.
"I received my final offer for Conductor trainee in Gillette, WY! Accepted it and completed the paperwork. Why wouldn't I? :)
I would like to thank Sean, Freewood, John, and everyone else for all of their help and support throughout these past couple of years. Sean, I must publicly embarrass you and say that really cheesy but oh-so-true line... Couldn't have done it without you and your e-book! It was the start for my success. Thank you, thank you!
On to the next chapter..."
