Congrats to all the new hires! Its really awesome to see the success if all you guys!

Now onto a different note. Age! I'm pushing 50, and had a 55 year old grandmother in my training class. I haven't seen or experienced any age discrimination. I won't go as far as to say it doesn't exist, but just not been my experience. I think two BIG factors might be location, and indeed perception. Just my 2 cents!

On a side note, I guess I just got hired again. I start LETP on 2/13!

Congrats again to all you guys, and best of luck!

I did, and it was a total fluke! Bid two locations here in Powder River, and was really surprised to get the phone call telling me I made it for Edgemont! Totally pumped up! Thanks so much!

Congratulations to all of you that got your offers. Make sure you go into this with an open mind. Those of you with families make sure you express to them what this means going forward. This job still put a big strain on your personal lives, marriages, friendships, etc. Take some time to get used to it, don't try to swallow it all in one big bite.

First time posting. Got final offer for conductor trainee for Feb. 20, La Crosse Wisconsin. Called my contact today and he was unsure if I can give two weeks notice to my employer? Anyone else have this experience? Is rail traffic slowing?

Thanks everyone that posts, it's great having all this information from smart people that I can access. I ain't kissing ass, I mean it! Thanks a bunch!

@Zippo....Im confused, you got your final offer to start in roughly two weeks, and they still said "dont give your two weeks"? Thats confusing...when did you get your final offer?

@Dgoldman. Got my final offer Wed. Feb. 1. Contact I had didn't want to say to me "go ahead and leave your job" I guess. He thought there was a chance it could get pushed back, didn't want me pissed at him I assume. Emailed HR and they said go ahead and give two weeks. Probably gonna just wait until the last minute to make a move. Sucks, but it is what it is.

    PS- I accepted the offer.

@ zippo.. Well that sounds much better. Cleared medical on Wednesday night now I'm just waiting for final offer...I hate waiting!

Yeah Dgold, the wait was tough for me too. What's worse is dealing with questions from family and friends that ask on a daily basis if I heard anything! "I will let you know when I know", was my response toward the end. If it were easy I guess everyone would do it ya know. Good luck!

Congratulations to all new hires! Want to remind everyone this is for the FINAL offers
and not "ready to start"... So please wait until you have final offer to post.

    Great job guys!

@hwm I am sure that was a coincidence. They really like retired military.

@2ndmerlin You should have went to your employer and explained the situation and I am
100% sure they would have told you to take the job. This would have given you more seniority!

Also if an employer fires you then they don't give you 2 weeks notice. So I am glad it worked out but I advise everyone else to take the job when it's offered!

@sean since I was responsible for contracts totalling millions and was under contractual obligation with regards to this, I legally did need the notice or stood to experience significant financial penalties. CN not only understood this and respected it, this is why they gave me the guaruntee that it would not be held against me, and they guarunteed that the next opening would be mine. (Which turned out to be just 2 weeks later anyway) RE the seniority, the net effect is 0 since they had no other candidates for the terminal I am assigned to, (There are still 6 openings as of my hiring, so in fairly short order, there will be others below me..) Further, since seniority is based on Application date, not Hire date, the delay is moot.

Certainly in general I do agree with you, someone should approach thier current employer and see if something can be worked out, however things are not always that simple, and not all RR are unsympathetic to this... further, I was also told that if I had breached my contract with my former employer, it could have jepardized my advancement into management in the future. (A long term goal of mine, and HR specifically suggested that they concur)

Well I waited a while to post but I did get my final offer and have been in fact training for the last Month in Edgemont, SD for a conductor position with BNSF. This forum and Sean's book were infinitely helpful in my journey to railroad employment. It took about a year and a half, and 90 applications between Amtrak, UP and BNSF before the opportunity's started coming in. I kept reworking my cover letter and resume based on information in the ebook and suggestions from the forums. In the two months before I accepted an offer from BNSF for Edgemont I also recieved 3 other invites for other BNSF locations as well as invites for Amtrak and UP. Many thanks to Sean and the other members of the forum who have helped me along the way and good luck to the rest of you!!
