I have applied for every railroad, and had over 12 interviews with bnsf whom I really wanted to work for. 8 months ago I applied in the galesburg, IL area and was an alternate for mechanical shop laborer, and than I applied for the carman position in chicago and out of 85 ppl, I made it as an alternate. I was content that i made it but was not satisfied, I got a call that I was selected for the shop laborer, but than at the last minute they switch to another craft Carman baby!!!!!! I felt so lucky and god speed because they were taking so long to finish the offer i was getting worried, and I caught a big brake. I was going to shoot for conductor or carman after a year i was going back to interview/hiring sessions. After 4yrs they finally gave me a shot and a craft transfer in a week.lol I start on the 20th of this month Feb. yeaaaa!!!!
Just Hired after 4 1/2 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so happy, love money but I will enjoy the job and learn first than the money will come. I am just wondering about the pay. If a journeyman makes 26.08 or so an hour as an apprentice do I make %85 of that?It use to be 21.03 which is 85 percent of 25.03 but after contracts it says an journeyman makes 26.38 or so. I also want to know how is the work load, the yard that hired me is a freight yard not passenger, and Im just wondering about a typical day as a carman?

Don't know about your day as a Carman but congrats for sticking at it. I came across a new Carman last week, he was working in between standing eqpt, without a blue light and I was going to Hook up to his cars. I know you don't understand yet but you will, I could have chopped him in half and it would be his fault. Learn fast and get a rubber neck, as a Carman, Blue light is your protection, forget that at your peril!!!!!!!!!!!!!
