Am I the only carman here. I just got hired and am waiting for a start date.

Where did you get hired out of?
Posted 1 year ago # -
You may be the only carman but you got the job so that's what counts!

UP hired me and it took about 6 or 7 weeks from application to being on the job.

Did you get hired as a mechanic?? If so how was the interview
I have mine on the 20thPosted 12 months ago # -
How are you liking the carman position? I'm thinking about applying for one with NS.

Hired as apprentice I should add. I'm new but I think I have found a home. Everyone seems to love the RR. The interview is exactly what you would expect if you have read the forums and Seans book. It is intimidating when you have maybe 6 people grilling you but be prepared and don't get rattled. I had interviewed at one other RR a month previously for a different job and they were obviously uninterested in me but it was a learning experience.

I'm a Carman for Amtrak and I've also worked for TTX for my Apprenticeship . I think it's a great job and I've been able to provide a comfortable living for my family with it ( of course my wife works too) but overall it's a good craft and you will learn a ton about the cars . Enjoy guys

I'm thinking about applying for a Carman position with BNSF I was wondering if they are allowed or required to work much overtime. I was also wondering if you have any idea if I would start as a apprentice or journeyman there website says 'Journeyman status is commensurate with 3 years of related experience and/or training or a current journeyman card.' I have 11+ years rebuilding tractor trailers didn't know if that would qualify as related experience or not. Any answer would be appreciated.

What all are modern carmen responsible for. I know they still replace axles and springs as well as draft gear and center pins, but do they still have to do re-railing or has all of that been contracted out now? I have a few years on mechanic experience and like I said in my intro I work with a tourist railroad and I'm getting familiar with the ins and outs of the cars, even though they are 50 years old. The pay is there, my only worry has been that they want you to do anything and everything and work you into the ground like my previous mechanic job did.

They are all gonna try and do that to you RC... The carmen fix cars, they don't do track work.

Hello all! I've been diesel/on highway truck mechanic for a little over 3 years. I recently applied for a carmen journeyman position Amtrak in Chicago. I live in Kansas City now, but I would love to move to Chicago. Anyways, do you think my work experience so far will transfer over well with Amtrak? Will Amtrak even bother with an out of state mechanic without rail experience? Just wanting a little input on my situation for better or worse. Thanks!

yes it should transfer over well but if there are people with locomotive experience then they will get looked at first.s

Does anyone know how often CSX runs training classes for diesel mechanic at the REDI center? They dont hire mechanic as often so I was thinking they probably only have a couple classes a year..
Posted 8 months ago # -
I would imagine that yes only a couple times a year.

Just got the Invite to a Hiring Session for a Apprentice Carman for UP down in City of Industry. This will be my first RR Interview so any tips or tricks? I got Seans book and seems like it covers it pretty good.

Does the Mechanical Shop Laborer position count lol, Im hoping I can move up to one of the other Jobs after Ive done my time. I applied for the railcar repair job also. But I ewas invited to the shop laborer interview and took it, and now that's what I'll be doing.
I glad you started this thread.
Seems like everything is usually about getting a Conducter trainee spotPosted 7 months ago # -
Get in with what ever job you can then you can always transfer after a year or so if you don't like it.
