Hours worked and overtime is all depending on where you are hired. Some places have lots of overtime and some don't. This is stuff you need to ask during your interveiw.

Well Union Pacific made me the cond job offer. First hiring session, and I think Seans ebook helped tremendously! Thanks Sean

How many hours does a carman really work? I know they give you a number but I was wondering how much overtime they get and what does a decent check a week looks like.

Carmen usually work a guranteed 40. 8 hrs a day. But it depends on your local agreement. And the same with overtime. I am seeing like 16 hrs or so OT a month.

Hello all,
Just attended a hiring event on Friday 12/16 for electrician in Allentown, and got the interview. I was called on Tuesday with an offer for Freight Car Repair. Not sure if I should consider this opportunity. I am currently employed, and make decent money because I work 20+ hours overtime. Had my sights set on being a conductor or electrician. Also, I cant find any info or reviews for this job. Any help or advice would be awesome. Thanks.Posted 4 months ago # -
Your just fixing broken train cars. If you got a good job with overtime and it's solid then think twice before you quit.

I have been applying for RR jobs since Aug when I found out our plant was closing down in Nov. I have mainly been applying for conductor positions but I have also applied for a few assistant signalperson and track laborer positions and also a carman apprentice. I was chosen as an alternate for UP train crew and recieved a rejection from bnsf after my interview with them. Anyway yesterday I recieved a email from kcsr telling me that I was invited to attend a interview for a carman apprentice position that I applied for in Shreveport La. The email told me where the yard was located and where to go and said to be in the lobby at 10:30am and wait for the interviewers to call me.I know that in my last 2 hiring sessions they gave us tests and said in the email to bring pencil and pen and what tests we would take. This says nothing about tests or what to bring or anything just where and what time to be there. Has anyone else interviewed for a carman apprentice position with kscr or know if there is a test that I should expect? Cant find much info on a carman apprentice position so thought I would just ask here.I thought about just passing this one by but after reading what alot of people on here have said about taking any position to get my foot in the door I am going to go ahead and go to the interview in the morning.I have Seans ebook and am good in that department.I passed the tests at the other interviews I have been to and thought they were pretty easy but with this position I figure there may be some big mechanical or electrical skills test.I am still trying and filling out as many apps as I can and wish everyone else the best of luck with their interviews and apps.

My husband just got a final offer of employment for a mechanic position with BNSF-it's been a long, long process. How stupid is it to turn it down? We don't want him to run the risk of being "blacklisted" as we would love this opportunity, but getting him to where the position is would be a nightmare:( We also have no idea how much the insurance costs or what the union dues are-two potential deal breakers.

Ask HR or someone about that stuff then make your decision...

We took a leap of faith and he took the job. Starts on the 23rd :) He's moving up there this weekend.

Just a question for mechanical positions with railroads:
I have a strong background in maritime engineering, working as a member of the ship's crew, in the engine room as well as formal training, would this be "enough" to get on-board, either as an oiler/fireman, shop helper or diesel locomotive apprentice?

SeaRail,
Your best bet is to look at the requirements on the company's employment website. My husband had 9 years of experience working on diesels and got hired on a few weeks ago with BNSF as a journeyman diesel tech. I know they're *desperate* for shop guys in Havre, Montana ;) One guy just started working there about 6 months ago and got hired on as an apprentice-he had less than three years of mechanical experience from what I understand. I could ask to double-check, but like I said, your best bet is to check the websites of the companies you'd like to apply for.@ Sean...thanks for the luck :) This has been the best decision we've ever made. He LOVES his job.

SeaRail,
My Terminal Manager at the terminal where i worked at had from soo much expiereince from workin at UP as an diesel electrician to even being in the military as diesel mechanic ... and HE gave me some GREAT advise ... if one wishes to work in the mechanical department THEY hired him as a cleaner cleaning the engines inside and out .. before long he got UPgraded to an apprentice .. and then long as a mechanic ... PLAIN AND SIMPLE LONG STORY SHORT every job thru CSX or UP or even any railroad they will send u to school and the way how they test u to know if your what it takes what they want is thru the assessment testing right even before you get hired ... thats how they know if they want you or not!!!!!!! Hope this helps u out a bit as well as mama24's words of advice!!!!!!!!!!!Posted 2 months ago # -
Good luck!

yea give it a shot at least. I am a Carman for UP, just got hired 4 months ago as a apprentice. I had no real mechanic time, I was a seasonal firefighter. So not to much to worry about. Like said earlier they pretty much weed out though the assesment test and. App. Good luck!

Well I applied for a Railcar Repair for BNSF here at Belen, New Mexico. This is good since I live in New Mexico myself.
Though my original plan to get started working on the railroad was as a Train Crew type of job.
But is this a good place to still get started with the railroad, to maybe even move on to a conductor type position later? Its not that I would get this job and immediately try to leave, I would most likely work as Railcar Repair for a few good years, (5+), but I would want to work as a train crew later.

Jeremy,
Any start is a good start :) Good luck! My husband has been working for BNSF as a diesel tech for just over 2 months now and absolutely loves it.Posted 1 month ago #
