I got the invite today. It said there would be a physical abilities test held there what should I expect? will the entire physical be held or just lifting arm leg strength?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Just wondering what kind of raise increments you recieve working under MOW. It says you start out at 21 and some change but do you top out at 25? how long till you are journeyed out?
Posted 1 year ago # -
@Buck You won't be doing a medical physical only the physical abilities testing stuff like strength testing etc... YOu should not have a problem with it unless your super overweight.
@nvrebel I am not familiar with mow pay stuff.. Maybe someone else has an answer for you on that one. On conductor side you get a raise once a year until you top out at the 5th year. Maybe it's the same at mow side?

Thanks Sean it says bring comfortable clothes to wear for the test so dress nice and bring extra clothes to change into?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Yeah you could bring a pair of jeans and tennis shoes...

Hi, my name is Terry. I am new to the forum. I just recently got my "released to start" notice from Union Pacific for a track laborer/welder position in Martinez California. Lady from HR says they are waiting for two more people to finish up physical/background check/ drug tests then they will call with a start date. My question is if anyone is familiar with the Track Laborer position what if any travel is involved and the pay scale and probationary period and ANY other significant info that I might ned to know before I actually start. Thanks!

You may do some traveling as track labor when your fixing broken tracks too far away from your home terminal... Check website for other info like pay, etc..

Anyone here ever heard of Loram MOW? A coworker of mine told me to look into them as they are in desperate need for help. Well after "looking" into them, I can see why I think. Here is a blip from the posting.
*This position starts at $9.00 per hour. As a new hire, you can expect to earn between $35,000 to $45,000 your first year.
*Time and a half is paid after 40 hours per week. Typical work hours are 12-14 hours per day and 70-75 hours per week. Hours may be longer or shorter depending on operational needs.
*There is NO per diem for this position. Employees are responsible for all personal expenses including, but not limited to, food, phone, laundry. Loram does pay for hotel/motel rooms and all work-related travel to and from the job site (flights, buses, etc.).
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL CANDIDATES
*Ability to travel North America 100% of the time. Average travel assignments last 6 to 12 weeks in duration before returning home for a 2 week unpaid time-off period. The job will not be based near your place of residence and relocation is not required or expected. It sounds like a good learning experience, but $9/hour sounds like slave labor for the work they have to do? Anyone have any experience with them?

That is slave wages plus all those hours.. no thanks!

I have an interview with BNSF for a Track Maintenance Laborer position based out of Lincoln, NE on January 10th and I have several questions...
1.) The original job posting didn't list pay rates, but another laborer position based out of the powder river basin listed around $19.22 per hour, and full pay rate of $21.00 per hour (post training I presume..) would this be the same or is each location a tad different?
2.) What should I expect to hear from the "scary speech?" My butt is not moving because I've wanted to work for Burlington since I was I was a child, so whatever is said will not change my mind....
3.) I have Sean's e-book I bought last summer, so I plan on reviewing it when I return home from Colorado...does anyone have any other interview advice??
Thanks!!!!

I worked for a canadian company Cando Contracting Ltd. Its company that does alot of track maintenance for CN CP and various companys. I was a track labourer and I recently applied to CP as a CNDR but also applied to CN as a Track Laborer.

yes the pay should be the same. The scary speech info is in the book. Just read this forum and follow the advice in the ebook. Good luck!

Norfolk Southern track laborer starts around 20.71 an hour and it's a 3 year step topping out at just under 23 an hour. Of course they are working on a new contract so those numbers could change most likely for the better. I read that the union and railroads called for a cooling off period with resolution to take place by the 7th of February.

Also as a track laborer the scary speech isn't that bad. Your schedule is usually 4 ten hour days or more if needed. OT starts after 8 hours per day. With NS you are not on call but they do expect you to answer the phone if called out for emergency work. Even the track "gangs" are on a fairly consistent schedule, than on the transportation side of things.

SAWEET! Thanks Jackal and Sean! I'm really jacked up because my dad was a Signal Maintainer for Burlington Northern and he died in 1984 when I was one and a half. He worked on the Kansas City Branch out of Table Rock, NE and it's always been a childhood dream of mine to follow in his footsteps and keep railroading a part of the family...so any tidbits or advice from you pro-roaders out there is absolutely and completely appreciated!

Hello, I have found this forum helpful so thank you already. I have a few questions though. I just received a conditional offer from BNSF for track maintenance/laborer in the MN, SD, ND, Iowa, region. When I applied for the job I thought it would be in my home town of Brainerd, MN, but I found out they are hiring for the whole region I said above. I have some questions about it. How is the travel (they talked about bidding and the gangs a little, but I don't know alot about it). Being layed off is going to happen I was told (could this be a year or a month type thing). I guess more Q's I have are what is the average time I might be away (3+ hours) from home, and for how long (1 week or 2 months, I realize what type of job would account for that). Anybody have any tips or answers (or general impressions) of what this postion might entale.
Thanks in advanced

Musky999,
Well working in MOW for UP I am a regional and not systems MOW which means Im in my home Region. I have worked with a few guys that are Track Laborer Systems and they travel about 2 weeks on and then 1 week off. Some of the guys I have worked with are from Tucson and they Work in El Paso, then Go to Phoenix and then over to Omaha. So it all varies. Sounds Like you got a bigger Region. Not sure how BNSF arranges that. My Region Covers west Texas El PAso to Southeast New Mexico. Sometimes a drive out 45 Min to the Job Site. As far as lay offs, If you get furloughed you have to call into to the bid clerk and check your status, again this is what I have been told. The Job in itself has some long hours, I love it personally. Especially when you get your paycheck. The last company I worked for I used to Put in 106 Hours in a week when I was on call. Its not like that with the RR, except if their is an emergency. If you get called for an emergency with UP you have 90 mins to respond.Posted 3 months ago # -
