I have accepted the first offer just waiting for all the medical calls so i can schedule them.I just found this website kind of wish i would have found it before my interview day, but all went well. My question is the scary speech was kinda scary for me i have a 5 yr. old and a 14 month old, so the travel was kinda scary. I have a friend who is a track inspector for the area im suppose to be starting in and he seems to think i can bid out to stay in the area, does this routinely happen or is the whole track laborer for bnsf just a gamble.I have to occasionaly travel for my current job which pays well and i have a work truck so its hard for me to give up, but i know the rr is good in the long run.I just want to know if i put in a few years will i be able to stick around home. Its long winded but a major decision in my life im 30 right now scheduled start date 4-6-12 burlington iowa.

had mow supervisor interveiw feb 21 for NS in norfork va, they had a mixture of transportation and c&s people all there and interveiwed everybody in our class. mine lasted about fifteen to twenty minutes about the same for everyone. was told they would contact us for next phase the background and medical interveiw soon, have not heard anything yet and going alittle crazy listening for phone. also notice that the transportation supervisor job opportunity has closed on web site. anyone out there for same position (MOW supervisor) heard anything?? Or how long could this go on before notified either way. my status still says in progress. going nuts!!!!

Does anyone know how strict c.n is with colour deficentcy for track maintainer I can see some of the numbers on the colour blind test but not all. I passed it last year, but not this time, plus my vision was a little worse, have 20/30 now. This time conditions were against me I got caught in a blinding snow storm driving their for three hours just before the medical, and my eyes were sore. Not sure what I should do.

You just have to wait and see if you passed or not. If you did not pass there is nothing you can really do about it...

Hey all, I'm interested in applying to CN to be a Track Maintainer - does anyone know if that is often full time permanent?
So what are the typical duties in winter up in snowy and northern areas? I assume it's mostly just clearing snow from switches, maybe driving snowplows, emergency repairs and track inspection in winter. Does that sound about right?Someone mentioned 4 ten hour days/week for hours for one company and up to 14 hrs/day for another one. So is 4 tens typical? Thank you :)

Each RR is different and yes it's full time job.

Greetings everyone! I am new to the RR industry and was hoping someone could help me with a few questions , so please forgive my ignorance. I was recently invited to a hiring session with UP for Track Laborer - Regional Driver City of Industry California , first question is are you on call 24/7 with no scheduled days off? Also what is the likelihood of being furloughed on the MOW side of the industry? I have a commercial Class A license with all endorsements does this also aid from being furloughed? Can not seem to find answers to these questions anywhere , thank in advace.

SoCal,
I work for MOW on the western side. everyone is pretty much on call, but your normal work day is about 7am to 3:30Pm. Thats if your regional, i.e. you have a certain area you work in. As far as being furloughed, thats not really an issue right now as UP is growing. Once you get in and you start bidding other jobs you can go on a systems gang and travel. They work compressed halves, 8 days at 12 hours and then 7 days off. They get paid mileage and a per Diem wage. But the regional job your just a Monday through Friday and if something big comes up, you get called in. Having a class A license, everyone is required to have at least a class B or A depending on your job title.Posted 1 month ago # -
I've been told many times that this job entales alot of traveling. But I'm ready to do to go. I already sold my 81 camaro to get something I can travel with. I am ready to go.

Hey Guys...My name is Alan and I'm new to the forum. I've searched for an answer to my particular question and can't find it, so here goes.
I'm interested in getting on with NS MOW. I've got a friend who works for NS MOW and lives in my area. He's been trying to get a "hiring location" for me, but so far hasn't been able to. His home terminal [my terms may not be correct but you get the picture] is Atlanta, GA even though we live in KY. He travels and works all over the NS system.
There are currently 23 Track Laborer jobs listed on the NS website in various locations. Can anyone here offer any insight as to how I know which one[s] I should apply to considering the fact that I am not willing to relocate..? In other words, I want to do what he does - live in KY but travel across the system during the week.
I know my friend is doing his best to help me. He's out on vacation the next couple weeks and I need a job. I've bought and studied Sean's eBook and am prepared/ready for an interview. I'm looking for insight as to how the multiple Track Laborer job location thing works so I can make an intelligent decision as to what to do next.
Thanks.

For those of you that are wondering about MOW training it is 3 weeks long. First week is introduction to the railroad. You get boot certificates and prescription safety glasses forms the first or second day. The rest of the week is alot of safety stuff. The second week, more safety stuff then on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we went into the field for OJT. Then the last week is going over the book of rules and a final test on Friday over the book of rules. Make sure you study the BOR every night because it is alot of information to remember. This was for BNSF by the way. If anyone has any questions just PM me.
