Hires, share your experiences, training tips that work for different learning styles etc... warnings about what to do and not do.
New hires, ask away, if someone can answer it we will. What to expect, hours of OJT and Classroom, homework load etc....

Dumb question probably here but is it ok to wear a hat our first day? My current job we aren't allowed to wear hats so don't wanna break a policy on the first day lol

kix - Yes, hats are fine. On the 2nd or 3rd day, you will be issued with the dreaded "New Hire" orange cap, which you are required to wear when on OJT so that people know that you are a dumbass !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the dreaded hat issue... With CSX on you first day of training you will be issued the standard "Lemon head" CSX hat and will be required to wear it outside of the classroom every day while you are on duty, even while you are on the transport bus. You can change to your normal wear after you reach your hotel... Well, after you push in your chair of course. After that, you will wear that SAME hat for a total of one year when you reach your seniority date.

mshaffer3371 - Thank God BN only require it until you "Mark Up", 17 weeks. Wouldn't care but it is a really crappy hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is starting to grow on me.... Like mold, kinda looks like it too within the beginning stages of mold. LOL, The hat does keep you safe though, heck, I am ready to buy some more, just to walk out in the Chicago yards years later and get special treatment. LOL

I'm pretty sure my brother just marked up in Kansas City, and he said you never have to wear the hat. Wait, I'm 100% sure!!

Kix,
Do NOT wear a hat in training at West Quincy. I just got out of class there and the Training Coordinator has only two pet peeves: hats indoors, and calling your sigificant other "old lady". Do NOT wear a hat during class (indoors). When you have training outside or while on OJT, a hat is fine. We were not issued the New Hire hat and in fact I have never even seen one in person, so that should tell you that nobody wears them in West Quincy. We were given a winter cap by one of the trainmasters though which is actually a nice cap.

No kidding?

Varies by where you are, our trainers din't care what you were wearing as long as you were not naked or offensive

No Hats anywhere I've been eihter, for new hires! Just make sure you have your PPE ready to go, and life is good!

1st week of training at CN almost over now, and 2 comments about above.. at CN Absolutely no hats inside!!! and 2nd, yes at CN you get a Green high vis vest for your first 2 years... then you get to go to the normal yellow one. If anyone has any questions about training, feel free to ask them and if I can, I will answer them. Just be patient, we are insanely busy... (8-9 hour days with 4hour homework every night) at least for now. Oh and one other hint... don't be late your first day... we had 1 person that was late day one... they simply told him to go home!

2ndmerlin - No hats inside etc.. sounds more like a Gulag Haaaa!!! Don't have any of that here at Interbay with BN. Wear what you want as long as it's not offensive, the instructors are top notch and treat you as a fellow railroader.
Same with the homework though, my advice to anyone who has children at home, let your wife know that you are going to need an undisturbed 2 to 4 hours every nightPosted 2 months ago # -
Amen ALB! Undisturbed time during conductor training is a MUST! And it gets even worse for LETP!!! I'm getting older every day! LOL

Hello. A couple of questions I wonder if someone can answer. I'm starting training on Monday Feb. 20.
What do we do the first week?
For each individual who answers, what are the work hours for on the job yard? Random I would guess, lol!
Also one piece of advice you can give a guy starting out would be appreciated greatly. Thanks a bunch!

For which railroad Zippo?
Posted 2 months ago # -
ALB...now I'm worried. If all you need is a larger HD, what am I to do. I'm a 386 stuck in a Core Duo world!
Posted 2 months ago # -
b_bronov - Just up your RAM, the slot is behind your left ear.
Zippo - I can only speak for BN. First day introductions etc.. Hand out Rule books, important phone numbers, intro to BN and safety rules. Day 2, basic rules, boot coupons, TWIC card info (Seaport terminals only). Days 3 - 6 Hand signals, Lantern signals, Radio issued and Radio signals, more rules especially about coupling (making a Hook) and uncoupling. Hands on basic signals, coupling, switches etc... Initial Terminal Air Brake Test (Class 1) More rules, then more rules, oh and did I mention more rules. 2nd week begins 3 weeks of Yard OJT, you may work days, swing or nights, they may be 8 or 12 hour shifts.
Welcome to the RR, a lot of fun but learn to keep your ears and eyes open, if you don't you may well die in a heartbeat. As for one piece of advice, I'll give you two. If you don't know ASK and if in any doubt take the SAFEST COURSE.Posted 2 months ago #
