It's alright DARIUS30. I'm 19 and got an interview with N.S., I'll let ya know how it goes! Just try to make it as strong as possible and also try to find someone that works for N.S. at the terminal your going for that you might know. It helps a lot! Best of Luck!

Stickman, if you in fact get hired, you being away and not avail. for anything the company needs you to show up for will hurt. So find out what happens after the interview and make your decision. Vacations will come and go.

@stickman - I agree with Freewood. If you want the career bad enough then you will make time for everything they need you to do. I dont know if you can postpone that trip for a week or so but I would just to make sure they dont decide to hire you.

I received an email about 2 weeks ago and it said NS was no longer seeking to fill the conductor position in Portsmouth, OH. I received an email yesterday that was an invitation to attend a hiring session in Portsmouth, OH. What's up with that?

I finally got an invite to interview with N.S. Instead of the conductor position it is as a student carman. Should I take the opportunity to get my foot in the door??? Should i wait and try again as a conductor?? How hard is it to transfer later, if at all???
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. P.S. Thank for the good read Sean. The e-book was very informative

I took the shotgun approach; I saw several positions available with NS at a location a little less than 2 hours from home. I applied for them all, 3 Conductor, 1 Track Laborer and 1 Fireman & Oiler position. Well see what happens next.

Take the first one that offers the job. If you don't like it transfer after usually 1 year.

N.S. carman session: 20 invites, 13 shows, 1 left after job description, 6 interviews. Time to wait. HR seemed utterly disinterested at interview.

Sounds like the odds are stacked in your favor. HR are usually a bunch of idiots so give them any mind...

What type of physical test do you preform for NS?

You just have to love the "professionalism" of N.S. H.R. "We will notify you of our decision in 2-5 days. 8 days later...not a peep. You show up on time, dress the part, pass the test and they still treat you like crap. Srry guys n gals, just venting.

So, I got an invite to the altoona convention center (pa) for the "next step" in the hiring process from the folks at Norfolk S. I live in Tampa Fl. and I guess it's to be expected for me to come up with the travel expenses?!? Is it reimbursed to me later if I get the job, or is that silly of me to think this way?

Hi everyone I'm new to this forum just wondering if anyone could answer a question I had purchased the ebook and have studied it religiously I have been in law enforcement for 4.5 years and changed my resume like the ebook advised. I applied for a conductor position in Macon, GA and I still got the thanks but no thanks email. I also applied for the conductor position in Atlanta,GA and I haven't heard anything.Any advice would be greatly appreciated

kcrago, what position are you testing for? You normally apply for a job in you region or where you hope to work, unless it is for a non-union supervisory position, in which case you are responsible for all of your expenses up until you begin training.

Rob, n.s can take weeks or even months to respond to applications.

I applied for several jobs in every region and I got an opportunity to interview in the Altoona PA region for Diesel Mechanic - I'm glad that they accepted my online application at the very least - so to answer your question, I think it's a union job. The construction jobs in Florida are few and far between, so Altoona, or Al-anywhere is groovy for me.

So is there anything I can do other than wait for an invite to a hiring session? Anyone?

@robert You just have to wait for them to email you. In the meantime keep applying at different rr's....

Attended the hiring session for conductor in Chattanooga, TN on Monday June 6th. 80-90 people attended, and of those, 38 were given interviews. I felt really good with my interview and felt like I sold myself well. Now, it is a waiting game. First application, first interview. Lets hope this keeps going in the right direction.

I just got back from an interview with NS. I thought it was for a locomotive electrician but they put up the wrong job description. The interview was for a maintenance electrician at a coal loading dock. I probably wouldn't have applied for it if I had known that. Twelve guys were there for that job. I tried to do everything they way Sean said to in his book and I was one of four that they interviewed. I didn't know much about the electrical questions they asked me but I answered truthfully. They emphasized the importance of following instructions. Listen closely because they will only tell you once. I don't feel too qualified for this job but it was a good experience anyway.

@Zeke Were they asking you questions about electrical work, or was that the interview questions?

In the interview, they asked about certain control circuits for high voltage DC motors used on big conveyor belts and very high voltage AC. I was a maintenance mechanic a long time ago and remembered some of the basics. They wanted to know about the most challenging electrical problem that I ever solved, if I ever changed out printed circuit boards, if I could read and understand schematics and how much experience doing hands on electrical work I had. Most of the stuff I know is from airplane mechanic school, which is similar to automotive. The good part was that they wanted the person they hire to learn how to operate all of the equipment before they let them work on it. This is supposed to take about a year, then they let you start to help another electrician doing maintenance.

Just wanted to give you guys that are getting ready to apply a heads up. NS now has an online application that you will fill out when you apply for a position. They will first ask for your resume and cover letter and then you will go immediately into the application, I managed to make it through without hitting the timer, but I didn't think I would have to submit one. Luckily I had my information handy.
