Hey guys I'm new to the forum here and was looking for some feedback. I had an application for conductor pending for two months with csx and finally got an invite to a hiring session. Very excited until I found out I won't be able to attend due to prior obligations. Can anyone tell me if this totally ruins my chances of getting future invites or how they may look at this situation? Thanks for any info

nd2006, I would make a serious attempt to cancel your previous engagement and attend your hiring session. I'm sure others will know better, but you have no guarantee of getting future invites no matter what you do. PLUS, that would be a helluva lot of potential seniority you are giving up if there does happen to be a future. Seniority is EVERYTHING with the railroad...

The railroad has no idea of "Prior Obligations" THEY are your prior obligation and if they are not, they figure you don't want it enough. (Military excepted)

ALB is right. When you hire, you are their (railroad) bitch. It is the truth folks, when they need you, you will and should come running. They pay you very well and if you have a chance to get into the group of railroaders you should, if you can't or don't want to, well, then you shouldn't. I have seen guys who worked when their wives family members passed away. That is the way it goes and if that is out of the norm, you really shouldn't work for the railroad.

I would absolutely try with everything in me, to be there. You got this one. Future opportunities are not guaranteed! I wouldn't miss it, if at all possible!
