I'm sure I have the answer already (thanks tater) but since this is a new thread just double checking for BNSF I just need to be under 35?
Thanks,
Jeffro

I think 35 is standard for all class 1 railroads.

Here's a link for anyone interested in calculating their BMI.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Lol, Im still considered obese and Im far from being fat. 32.1
Posted 4 months ago # -
@Stephen, yeah I know I'm @27.8 which says I'm overweight lol. BMI is a horrible tool, body fat % is a much better tool for measuring ones health or lack there of. As I've stated numerous times on this site, BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass, bone size or the density of the bones. It's a flawed approach to determining overall health. But hey it's a cheap, quick and easy measurement, and that's why they use it.

Just to show how bad BMI is for measuring health Friday night was UFC 141 Lesnar vs Overeen Lesnar is 6'5" 265# his BMI is 31.4 Overeen is 6'3" 256 his BMI is 32. There is not any fat on either of them. BMI says they are both obese. How can you be obese with no body fat. Go figure.

I agree nelson Im 5'11 195 and mine is 27. I bench 255 and run 4.7 40. They dont count the weight as muscle they just assume its fat I guess. The average person isnt built like that it takes alot of lifting and dieting to get, but they really should go on body fat % not BMI.

I gotta lose 25 lbs!

**Hot tip:**
Move with a purpose everywhere you go!
When out running errands, park your car further away from the store and when heading to the front door, jog there as if you were in a hurry. After running many errands, you've probably burned more calories than if you sluggishly walked from pt. A to pt. B.
Works for me!

Your so smart!

Okay, I'm not trying to pick on anyone, but here you go. From the guy who's weight loss now ALMOST matches his number of rejection letters from BNSF LOL, cut the fried stuff, walk more, eat more of the healthy stuff more often (I actually eat about 8 times a day now), and add tons of water to your daily intake! BTW Rejections: 150 Weight Loss: now sits at 145#. I'm feeling pretty damn good!

Congrats Johnnbea, that's great. I don't have weight to lose, I just think BMI is the most misleading fitness tool out there.

Awesome John!

Thanks Sean! I told you in the beginning, I WANTED this, and was going to go for it in every way!
@Jackal
I agree completely with you! BMI Sucks, but it's the reality we have to deal with, at least for the time being! I've resigned myself to the fact that I will NEVER get below overweight on BMI, even though, my doc says my weight is absolutely fine!Posted 4 months ago # -
Working out daily, cutting carbs drastically, eating more lean protein. I have lost 30lbs since I interviewed. johnbea has helped me a lot with words of encouragement and can't thank him enough! Nobody is going to give you the job you are going to have to earn it and if you keep that in mind you will do well. I want this job badly and I won't let some silly, convoluted, totally subjective guide keep me from attaining my goal. When I receive my final offer, positive thoughts, I won't stop there I am going to continue like johnbea and be a lean mean conducting machine!! LOL
Good luck everyone!Posted 4 months ago # -

http://www.fra.dot.gov/downloads/safety/hazmatch1.pdfIf you follow the links to the reports you will find the real reason behind all of the RRs emphasis on BMI. While BMI is certainly not the best metric to determine whether someone is overweight or obese, it is a very basic tool to use in order to immediately determine which candidates require additional screening. Since the obvious link between obesity and sleep disorders is of great concern currently to the FRA they ask those candidates with high BMIs to undergo a sleep study. It would seem that all they want to know is, if you are in a high-risk group, do you have a sleep disorder and, if so, is it being treated successfully?

The simple fact of the matter is this: unless you're a professional body builder (or a circus freak), BMI is reasonably good yardstick for overall health. Body builders have an excuse....3% body fat. I doubt very seriously that number like tat apply to most folks. As a person that dropped over 50 Lbs in a little more than 6 month, I can attest to the effectiveness simple physics. Eat more calories than you burn, you'll gain weight. Burn more than you consume, you'll lose weight...no magic bullet. For those that suggest that being able to bench 300 Lbs makes them fit, still while sporting a muffin top, I think you'll find very few sport nutritionists, doctors, or dietitians who would agree. Fitness is a combination of keeping fat off and good aerobic conditioning. If there were to be a magic bullet, then this is it, by gaining good aerobic fitness through exercise, you will NECESSARILY gain strength in the muscle groups you work. More muscle = higher caloric burn rate at rest. I agree that the demands of the job make exercise difficult, but if you can't free up 3 or 4 hours out of 7 days, you just aren't trying very hard. Apologies for the strident tone of this, but in the last 3 years of running my squadron's fitness program, I've heard every conceivable excuse, and maybe 2 or 3 actual 'reasons'. Exercise is hard, and initially painful, but nothing good ever came easily.

So basically, if your BMI is higher than 35 for BNSF, you don't get hired?????

I may be wrong, but I think the policy is that a sleep study is ordered to assess the presence or absence of sleep apnea. In the event that SA is present, I think you have to be on a CPAP and show usage. Not to beat a dead horse here, but most cases of SA in people with high BMI can be reversed by losing the weight. Now, all bets are off if you had SA with a normal BMI, and you're back to square one with the sleep study/CPAP.

BNSF Medical sent an email tonight...I have to do a sleep apnea test. HDL, LDL tests. clinical exercise tolerance test, and hip and waist measurement. This is after their Doctor said I was "fit for service".
I'll call my Dr. tomorrow and jump through the hoops I guess.Posted 3 months ago # -
Dave072- what was your BMI? if I may ask.
Posted 3 months ago # -
39.5 have lost 33 pounds since I applied in July.
Posted 3 months ago # -
dang, you ought to be getting close to the magic 35 by now then probably. Good luck on your extra testing. Sleep study is expensive, or at least was when I checked into it several years ago, sucks to have to pay for it, so long as you feel you dont have apnea I can understand going for it though. Again, good luck with it.
