I think ive read that the magic number you have to reach is also based on your weight ..i dont mean to scare anyone just wanna make sure you know to give it the max...when i went to the first location to test i was sitting in the waiting room with a guy who said he was just going to go smooth and steady because motion was more important than effort...im guessing he failed

So the more you weigh, the higher the strength number it looks for?
Posted 4 months ago # -
Yes, it is speed controlled. The faster you try to break the machine, the more resistance is created. This was told to me by the person giving the test & my experience on 2 occasions taking this test, was very true. I also know that your sex, age, and weight are all taken into account when scoring the test.
And I took it twice not because of failing it, but because the first go around my class was cancelled and it was over 2 years since I had taken it the second time. I did have the same tester.

can you give me a detail of what all you did for your strength test!!
they emailed me saying to allow for 70 minutes???
what exactly are all the different things,that you do for the 70 minute time frame??IPCS 3 part test – Upper body EBE / Step Test / PCE
it doesn't seem like these 3 tests will take 70 minutes?
this is for a CSX conductor position!Posted 3 months ago # -
70 minutes is for paper work and rest periods between the different tests.
Does anyone know if the step test score from ipcs is your vo2max?

Looks like I do not have to take the strength test. I was under the impression that all candidates had to take the strength test. Seems though, that not all positions on the railroad require the same tests.
When I started this topic I had applied for the apprentice signal trainee position, I unfortunately did not get that position but they did give a conditional offer for the Communications and Electronics Technician Position. I went in for the physical and background check with no mention of strength test.
I have only one obstacle to overcome, and that would be to see my doctor to get some issues checked out and sent back to the medical department within 15 days. Then I only need to spend one week at the training center after I get the final offer. The HR guy seems to think I can be qualified for the next class date March 5th.
Wish me luck.

I have a quick question, I am currently going through the medical process. I do have some per-existing injuries from the military. I have done the physical, I had to see my doctor to get re-evaluated on all those injuries, and send all my medical records pertaining to them.
I have degenerative disc disease, I had a shoulder surgery, and I have a plate and pins in my left ankle.
Could these things keep me from getting that final offer? I can do the job as a Communications and Electronic Technician, I currently do the same type of work. The physical went well, and my doctor also cleared me. How in-depth do they go, and how strict are they?

@jrudd
I am not a medical professional, nor a physical expert of any kind. I would suspect, however, that you may well come up against some challenges. The thing that makes me say that is nothing more than the "degenerative" disc disease. That may well come under question for you, but provide everything they ask for, and keep in mind, as long as they are asking for more information, they have not given up on clearing you! It's not impossible, just going to have to, more than likely, do a little more for them! Good luck man!Posted 2 months ago # -

@Elim2010
I am not 100% positive, but I do not think I have to take the strength test. I asked the HR guy about it and he said the requirements differ from job position to job position, and a Communication & Electronics Technician is not required to take the strength test. I already had my physical, background check, and drug test. I waiting final decision from the medical department, which makes me nervous because of my medical history of back issues, shoulder surgery, and ankle surgery.
I am also only required to spend one week at the training center and will not have to do the hanging test either.

@bradb
I think you would be fine to re-apply to any railroad, although you may need to wait six months to re-apply to CO, I assume is Canadian Pacific.
I am sure that the background check and physical are conducted fairly the same from RR to RR. When I applied at Norfolk Southern, they wanted to know ALL traffic violations in the last seven years, especially misdemeanors, such as owi. Be honest and don't leave anything out.
Get the ebook, its a bit expensive, but worth the money if you have questions that you can't find the answers to in the forums.

@bradb
CP uses Verifications, Inc as well, for their background checks. This is the same company that does the background screening for BNSF. They are pretty thourough, BUT, that said, if you listed all of the traffic offenses, and convictions there, and everything that was more serious was associated with the traffic things you already listed, you might make it through without question. The biggest thing to hang people up in background checks, are the surprises that pop up! Just wait it out, and see what happens. As for re-applying, you will most likely have to wait for a period of time to apply to CP again, but keep right on going with everyone else. Just be sure to correct your applications to include whatever is in question. If you are applying for BNSF, remember, you are already in the Verifications system, so they will already have everything they found for CP. Good luck to you!Posted 2 months ago # -
Could any of you shed some light on the Norfolk Southern Medical/Physical test and what is all involved? Thanks!
