St Louis service area most likely get sent to villa grove near Chicago the way it sounds no seniority and they pushed folks up there
Darn thought I had it wrap up in the bag. Just got the thanks but no thanks for U.P. Anyways I guess it was for the better. Was really wishing that I was going to get the career.
Sean and Freewood thanks for the blog. You guys stay safe and anyone else out there on the railroad. No more comments from Volusia.
got a situation here. kinda in a pickle here with this hiring process. I did all my test for my conditional offer. just waiting for the results.I no i passed everything both PAT and medical. So now just waiting on start date assuming they make final offer. does anyone no how long this can take? One would think it would be at least two weeks before start date as to give notice to present employer. You see I'm supposed to start a new job Monday, which will involve training. Do i waste the new jobs time? knowing that i passed all my test for a railroad job that I will be taking. Or do i let them know that they should go ahead and get someone to train who will be there permanently? but at same time i don't have anything final from railroad. or should i just go to new job and work without saying anything. Worst case sanerio they have to get another person they would have to retrain? cuz if i go ahead and tell them about my opportunity with the railroad then they will just let me go and then i will be screwed without unemployment.Just want to be respectful to these people. In today's economy its not easy finding work. Any feedback would be appreciated...
Hey everyone,
First time on the forum. I have interviewed with BNSF and UP. After two interviews with two different railroads no luck. My wife stumbled on Sean's guide and I have been reading it like crazy ever since. Now I have been invited to another hiring session for UP for a different position.
At both previous interviews I was asked " have you ever had a conflict with a co-worker and if so how did you resolve it? " Two different railroads, and same question. I responded that I was an easy going guy and never had a problem with anyone but if I did I would resolve it with my imediate supervisor and if it wasn't resolved then go up the chain of command until it was. How should I respond to this question if it is asked again on my next interview?
Also, what are the different tests one needs to preform on the physical abilities test?
Thanks for your help,
Jonathan
P.S. Interview with UP is in EL Paso, TX on Monday 4-11-11.
Jonathan.... HEARS WHAT i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.... What the heck are you doing to get three interviews with the biggest railroads in the U.S. and I have been passed up for interviews three times with BNSF and after the second time I went and spent $200 getting my resume and cover letter done by a pro and still the thanks but no thanks e-mail not even a invite for the interview / session. So give us the secret I now have a app and resume in with UP in Seattle hope to get a invite from UP. I'm ready willing and able!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok heres my story....My wife and I are relocating to the Seattle,Wa. area real soon. I started looking for a career in the railroad industry and found that BNSF was hiring 10 conductor trainee's in Seattle. Wow I thought, We want to move to Washington and I always wanted to work for a railroad and here a railroad is hiring in the area we are going to be living in. So I applied and got the thanks but no thanks e-mail. I thought there was some mistake I had all the skills except previous railroad exp. so I e-mailed BNSF's H.r. dept. with no reply. So about 2 months later here BNSF was again hiring now for 20 conductor trainees, so I thought it was a sign form god to get my act in gear so i bought sean's e-book read it over and over got a lot of good info from it paid $200.00 and had a pro do a beautiful cover letter and resume and I applied again. 10 days wet by and wow another thanks but no thanks e-mail...It is like they never even looked at my cover letter or resume...I have safety training and exp. coming out of my ears and nothing. I thought the journey was over and then learned that UP is hiring in Seattle as well so the other day I applied for UP and now the wait begins again...If only I could get and interview I could sell myself like a million dollars. All I want is an interview and if I screw it up I can say I tried at the least. I will keep saying my prayers working out at the gym and responding as a vol. firefighter until I get the interview......DAMN IT I WILL NEVER GIVE UP !!!!! They will interview me just to get me out of there hair. This is my second dream...my 1st was to lose more than 200 Lbs. and I did and one way or the other I will get this job. MARK THOSE WORDS.....HAVE A GOOD NIGHT ALL.
Thanks Tom for the response, what is a service area and how big are they usually.
Well with BNSF, I have an engineer friend who was able to get me invited to the hiring session in Denver. Even with some inside help that still didn't get me the job. As for the interview's with U.P. I got those all on my own. Those two jobs are in El Paso, TX so maybe there's not a lot of applicants there. I believe I read in Sean's guide in the resume writing section about using key words that they are looking for such as " transportation, mechanical, etc." Try that
Yea I got that...I had a pro who writes resume's special for the railroad industry do mine and she said that more than 90% of her clients get an interview...Just my luck I would be in the bottom 10% who gets the thanks but no thanks letter...lol
Hey guys I justed wanted to let you know that I talk to H.R. for U.P. They said I can't apply for position in Seattle for 6mths but, I can apply somewhere else. I look around for another area and it is a matter of location for me being I have wife and kids that would need support while I am gone. So as of right now I applied for C.S.X. I guess we will see what happens. Good Luck Everyone.
Service areas for UP are all different sizes. For example in Wyoming one service are is from Cheyenne west to Greenriver.... You can only transfer within that area.
St Louis service covers paduka ky Jeff city mo Peking il bloomington il villa grove il Salem il and dexter mo so large area not including all the little yards in between that you need several years to even think about getting into
Does anyone know how big the service area is for UP in Seattle,Wa.
Well being since I just went throught the Hiring session I actually know that answer. Seattle to Portland, OR to Hermiston, OR. Goodluck hopefully you will be able to get that career.
@Russell. If you hire on in one place you can not transfer out of that area for at least 2 years and then you have to have your supervisors approval. If Pocatello is not where you want to be you should reconsider and try for a job in the location you want. The choice is yours; however, and two years can be a short time or a long time depending on your view. Good luck!!!
Volusia, Would like to know who you talked with in the HR dept, because they are full of it. If you fail the reading test or have an interview and do not receive a job offer
you must wait 6 months before you can reapply to any location with UP, I know, had tried to reapply to a different location, Their computer app site will kick your app out and say you do not qualify. You need to call HR again.
Azguy2 - I called the 800 number that is on website and talk to someone in H.R. at the main corporation. Sry if my information was wrong but I was only passing on what they told me. I ask her if she was sure that it was not overall company and she said no.
I too have talking with the HR Dept, not the story I was given. If they let you apply to a different location more power to ya. They didn't let me. I have to wait until August 15th before I can reapply to any train crew job location with UP.
Ok I have a question. Has anyone ever seen U.P. ever call a person back after they received there thanks but no thanks status? I only wondering because the H.R. guy said there was 5 jobs plus some call backs. But he never went into detail about the call backs. Still keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks guys for the transfer info. Does anybody know pocatello's service area? And do they tell you stuff like that at the interview?
I think they go East to Green River, West to Nampa, North to Dillon, and South to Ogden but I am not sure if those are the exact places or if they vary a bit.
I'm having my 1st UP interview next wk 4/12 for a Train Crew Position in Little Rock, AR. I live in Illinois so I have to travel over 600 miles, I hope they will take that into consideration. I am prepared but I am still nervous because I have a speech impairment which means I can't sale myself as good as other people. I hope they won't judge me because of my speech, I will inform the forum of how it went next wk.
Don't worry about your speech. If you are confident it will show and that will speak for itself. If you are prepared you will do great!
How bad of an impairment are we talking about? Hopefully it doesn't get bad during times of stress or when nervous. Clear communications of mandatory directives and commands is important. How you do in the interview under that pressure can translate to how you handle in the cab.
@Freewood Its fine when Im under stress or nervous, it has never affected me at work. But Im pretty sure its going to become severe during the interview because it becomes worse when I'm trying to impress someone. I know that is going to be a big negative and I'll have a slimmer chance of getting the job but I have to at least try I can't allow my speech to hinder me of trying to get my dream job.
Good luck Ramzies!
Does anyone know if UP has a big yard in seattle,Wa...I am trying to get hired on in Seattle,Wa with UP. I know BNSF is the major railroad in Seattle,Wa. just wondering how big UP is there. I can't find anything on the web about UP in seattle,Wa.
Does anyone know what callbacks mean?
The HR guy in Seattle said he had 5 open positions and callbacks. Does this mean it is still possible for me to receive the job or does that mean he already called the people who would get callbacks.
@ffpopio - I searched in google "Seattle, WA Union Pacific" and it brought up mapquest of the office which the yard is next to it.
