Had actual physical today...Once the testing was done I waited in the room for the actual Dr. to come in. Is it normal for him to come in and not do a thing besides introduce himself and basically say you are free to go? I just thought this was strange and dont know if it is a good or bad thing....I know you are not supposed to ask questions but I thought there would be a little discussion of some sort.
    Anybody exmperience something like this?

I am going to start a training class in Baton Rouge Feb 13. I live in Memphis and noticed a position just opened up here in Memphis. It is possiable to transfer when and if I pass my training for Train Crew?

i have an interview with Union Pacific in St Louis on Tuesday. I am interviewing for Operations Management. A little background on myself, I am a 4 year Civil Engineer which has worked for the local state transportation department as a construction inspector. I see a lot of these posts have been geared towards becoming a conductor, but has any one had experience in interviewing for operations management? Sean... maybe you could help me out here since I was unsuccessful in my research.

    Thanks!

Well after a long stressful week of waiting I got the 'Thank You' update on Union Pacific's website. While I do have the eBook I know I botched some of the interview questions. All I can do is re read the eBook... several times and try to beat the answers into my head better next time. Congrats to those who who got hired in Clinton IA, if any are on here :)

I'm not giving up. I just hope there's some leeway on that 6 Months restriction to reapply for UP. I visit about 10 different railroad sites twice a day. Sometime in the A.M. and sometime after 6pm ET.

TommyC - Don't try and memorise answers, just talk about SAFETY and then talk about SAFETY again. Be prepared to answer a question on how you handled a conflict with a co worker

Its a very stressfull process. My husband got the no thanks update and then the web site says they are accepting apps in the same area for the exact same postion. We were told for no reason he can reapply for that post for 6mth. Is it possiable he will get a call if someone doesn't work out or we just out for the 6mths.

Does he use tobacco? Any kind, if he said yes it's an automatic thanks but no thanks.

No he had the interview and passed the test. They told him there is a possiblty that he could still get a call. Its just very frustrating since the posting is back on the web site. Didn't know if anyone else happened to ever get that second chance. Or if we r just stuck fr 6 mths

@sdewitt84 It's not really any different regardless of the position applied for. You still want to follow the tips and advice in the ebook.

@chris_andrea2010 It's possible that they could still call you!

I applied for Track Laborer Position Back in October 2011. Got the invite to the hiring session, Then attended it. Had to take a physical abilities test, Reaching stretch test, then pull up on a bar attached to chain, then 1 minute on an exercise bike. then if you pass its on to the interview. In the interview your asked about safety....tell them safety is up to you (yourself not them). Emphasize safety, also let them know your available to work all hours, your also going to let them know you work well with others and not a macho fighting type. You can take constructive criticism and like to learn new ways of learning job tasks. Again If you smoke don't smoke before, during the breaks and don't tell them you smoke. Don't let them know you like trains or your a train fan. If they ask if u like trains, just say their OK. Safety is the biggest thing they are looking for. I cant emphasize that enough! I had the Hiring session in December and I get the conditional offer That same day in December. I had to go for a physical, BE HONEST on you medical portion, even if you had a surgery from a previous work injury list it there. DO NOT TELL THEM IN THE INTERVIEW THAT YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HURT ON THE JOB. Save it for the physical exam questionnaire. No Felonies are allowed, and you have to be drug free, be able to pass a vision exam, color blind test and hearing test. I had a shoulder surgery back in 2005 from a previous job injury and listed that. As for me I have no felonies and I am drug free. Waited for the results on the exams and Background test and then then I checked on up's website 2 weeks later and it said cleared to start. I got Hired. Its a long process but worth it!

The only thing I can add to bolt fan statement is they (UP) performs a nicotine test along with a drug test.

Okay folks, the general ideas in the book, can easily be applied to any position within the railroad. Yes, the big hiring vehicle right now is conductors, because they feed many positions within the railroad. Conductor is entry level for train service, and youc an go up from there. So that's why you see the slant towards being a conductor. However, the cocepts of safety, situational awareness, teamwork, etc. doesn't change form position to position. However, it does change in its application; officials don't seem to be required to play as nice in the sandbox as we are! LOL

    @sdewitt84
doesn't matter your background or what you are after. The concepts are still the same. I was an Electrical Engineer, working in Construction Management with a Master's Degree, and still found the book to be the greatest investment I've made. I was able to apply everything I read, and just tweaked the resume and my actions, with each application. It all fits with the railroad in general!

i recently got a invite for reading test. I applied for the train crew in OK. I just saw that they also have a opening for train crew in Ft. worth which is closer to me since i live in Dallas. If i take the test for the Ok job can i use it for the Ft Worth position if they ask me to take reading test. Also what are the conditions for a train crew? I had read review as in you will always be away from home. Also you can easily be laid off. are these true? Im also studying Diesel Mechanic will be certified in june. What will be a better postition diesel mechanic or train crew? Both for UP in Ft. Worth. Also is the pay worth it? Thanks

Boltfan - I am in the same situation as you, almost. My interview was Jan 3, and if my calculations are correct based on your post, I should be cleared for hire by the end of the next week (2weeks since the physical). My question for you is did you receive a start date yet? When is it?

    Thanks, Scott

jgv0985 I originally applied for Installation technician I took a test that I had to pay $25. It was a skilled craft battery exam. That test was good for 6 months. If for some reason your not qualified or you become an alternate for that job or another position opens up in the same field that test is good for that other job as long as that job is in the same field. I didnt get the install tech but I got track laborer, but I had to take a different test for track laborer.

I would personally stick to the one that is closer to you because if you go for OK and turn it down to go for ft. worth, the HR rep might frown on you if its the same HR person doing the interviews for both jobs.

As far as train crew being away I'm not too sure, I'm a track laborer regional so I'm in one region West Texas, parts of East New Mexico. But if your concerned with Lay offs, UP is doing really well. If you take a look at CNN Money or MSNBC, UP is doing really well despite the recession. They are hiring because they are building back the workforce. I used to work for the state and I thought that was stable and I got laid off from the state of Texas. SO UP is more stable. Any Job can lay you off, but I cant really predict the economy. As for now UP is doing good. Its worth the pay, the benefits $200 for the whole family, Great retirement and did i mention great pay! Hope this helps

UP1speed (Scott) Hi, The HR Person told me that from start to finish , which means the Invite to when you are cleared to start its about 45 days (estimate). I originally applied in October , the job got cancelled, then I reapplied in November and I got notification on December 8th telling me the hiring session was Dec 29th. Immediately after getting the conditional offer the job on the 29th, I went to make my appointment for my physical Which was Jan 2nd 2012 and then on Jan 16th Cleared to start and my start date was on Jan 23rd of this year. Mine took about 39 days. So I guess it varied on how bad they want to get you in.
It said cleared to start on the website but the recruiter will call you and give you the start date.

You'll also get that automated phone call from that 402 area code number telling to check your status on unionpacific.jobs. Hope this helps

    @ jgv0985
No the test you take in OK wont count for the one in Ft Worth. Ft Worth gives you a reading test during the interview and it's 20 questions. There was a guy in my class that had taken the skilled craft battery test in Houston 4 weeks earlier and he still had to take the reading test.
I cant tell you which way would be better for you to go. I can tell you that Im an ASE automotive master and ASE Truck master certified technician and I took a job as a conductor. Iv been a mechanic for the past 10 years and have gotten burned out on low wages and companies not keeping their word plus any flat rate shop you go to will try to screw the mechanic as mch as they can so they can turn a higher profit. $25/hr for a diesel mechanic is decent pay. Your average pay is around $22/hr with years of experience but you can also go to the oilfield and make $30/hr pretty easily. I went train crew becasue I can always fall back on being a mechanic.

Hi guys, I am having an interview with UP in a couple of days for Operational Management position. I been reading this forum and it seem to me that I'll be given a physical on the same day too. So should I be wearing business attire and have a set of gym clothes ready in my car in case I have to change into something more comfortable for the exercise?

And also does anyone know how many people are they hiring? I just want to know what I'll be up against. Thank you.

    Lucy,
If your going to have a physical abilities test and an interview, the way I did it was that we were told that it was the physical exam in the morning and the Interviews in the afternoon. Check on the website to confirm that though. They were pretty clear to bring gym attire for the first part if the day. They don't just surprise you.
Also it's kind of tough to say how many people they are going to hire. I was up against 25 people and 5 of us got hired. It's all up to the companies need for employees.
