    largemouth, I was a bit intriqued by your interview itinerary. They had you take a reading test right off the bat, before company intro & scary speech?

    I applied for 4 Train crew and Extra Board Ticket Agent positions this month. How long does it take for Union Pacific to call or email me back ?

    pacgrewes; yup. It was right after a little bit of intro from the HR lady. 3 failed and then moved on. Actually I think scarey speech was next and then film. I think 7 left after scarey speech.

    When it says "are you willing to work away from home terminal with no relocation benefits " do they mean you have to provide your own housing while traveling or is this talking about transfers?

    I've recieved a 2nd Thank You for applying notice in the last couple of weeks for the Crew Dispatcher position.

    It reads: "we are considering other candidates who best match the requirements for the position of Crew Dispatcher and will not be considering your application further.
    We appreciate your interest in Union Pacific and wish you success in your pursuit of employment."

    Does that mean I can't apply for other positions at Union Pacific ? I applied for two train crew jobs 2 months ago.

    NationalPastime, you are free to keep applying for all positions. Just keep applying until they invite you to a hiring event.

    Largemouth, same start date in St Louis. I called the HR lady when my status changed to released to start and she said to go ahead and notify my current employer, and show up at the location on the training script. Seems like with Train Crew they don't call to say your officially hired, we just show up since we are given a start date in the very beginning. At least thats what I'm hoping since I'm just going to show up the Monday after next...

    Does anyone have any information to the contrary?

    Yeah when you finish jumping thru all the hoops then they will contact you to give you final offer and tell you to show up at XYZ training center...

    Hey guys, I haven't been around in quite a while.

    I'm in Afghanistan doing contract work on a police training mission over here. I've been here for one year now and just finished my first contract, but I've renewed for one additional year. The way it works, I can quite honestly call it quits at any time without any penalty. I just don't get my contract completion bonus.

    With that being said, do any of you think that opening a dialog with UP in regards to future positions would either help or hinder my efforts in any way? I wouldn't like to come home and sit on my couch for several months with no job and just wait for my chance with the railroad, at the same time, I don't want my current location to hurt me from being able to be hired either.

    I've been a police officer for 12 years, and a firefighter for 6 years back home. I'm just not so sure that I want to go back to that career when I return home from Afghanistan.

    Thanks guys,
    David

    Okay guys, I have been asked several questions, and I have no idea how to answer. So, that said, does anyone have any idea what the training for new UP conductors consists of? Thanks!

    Every UP service unit is different, but not by much in its training. My conductor OJT was 6 weeks. And in the middle of our training they extended our derail from 60 days to 120 days. shitty as it was on our 59Th day at that to boot.Railroad is always changing and its unpredictable try not to worry about what is to be expected and just go with what they give ya!. cuz once you think its going to go a certain way, because that's what you were told. BAM!! its a whole different direction. My class had new everything: new test, new safety equipment, new instructors that did not know the new test, new derail. Just try and flow with it. once your in your in! just stay SAFE. and good luck to you all

    David,

    I just jumped ship from the DOS WPPS contract in Kabul and lost out on my completion bonus. For me it was worth it to get in with UP sooner than later. I was there for over 4 years so I was ready to be home anyhow. I applied about 2 weeks before my leave started. I came home on leave and interviewed the about a week and a half later, and got my release to start before I was even scheduled to return. All in all I think it helped, they actually seemed pretty impressed that I applied for the position while in Afghanistan. In total it will be just over 2 months from returning home to my start date the the Monday after next.

    OK, Thanks. Do you mind if I send you a few PM's with questions as I go? Internet is pretty hit and miss being out in the field here, and I can't really stay on top of the forums as much as I'd like.

    @pokywilly
    Great advice! Just stay focused, stay safe, and do your job; you'll be fine. I think anyone around here has seen that from me waaayyyy more than once!

    @brian86
    I would certainly contact HR. Seems like a bit of a lag to me, but not really sure. Just contact them to make sure you haven't slipped through the cracks!

    @panchop
    Congratulations man! And good luck to you! Enjoy and be safe!

    @d_warner
    if you can't reach panchop, feel free to contact me. I am doing a little better right now at staying up with the board. But worse case, when I get back on the road next week, I'm still on at worst, every other day, most of the time though, at least once a day. Good luck to you sir!
